Student fees to go up 10 percent

Fresno State is being forced to make new plans in adjusting to the country̢۪s economic crisis.

University President John D.Welty said, in a video posted on Fresno State News, that the university is awaiting the passing of the state and federal budgets for education, before making any final decisions.

“We’re making progress getting the budget established for 2009-10, but there still remains continued uncertainty,â€Â Welty said in his video address.

However, the most recent proposed budget is most likely to see an $8.8 million cut.

The budget is pending on the passing of federal legislature̢۪s passing of a $10 billion education plan, $50 million of which would be issued to the California State University system and $3 million which would be received at Fresno State.

In order to reduce the high cuts, it has been proposed to increase student fees by 10 percent, which would cover $4.5 million of the cut.

There is also the possibility that class sizes will increase as a result of the elimination of nearly 100 low-enrollment classes. Many part-time teachers will not be rehired as well and overall enrollment may decrease by 500-600 students.

The budget is only a proposal and will not be finalized until anywhere from late April to early June, Welty said.

If “Springer” is Graham Walhburg, then how do you explain this exchange yesterday on another story “As deadline approaches, few ASI applications have been submitted for ’09-’10”:

    Yes:

I for one cannot wait until June, when the dumb-ass Walhburg and the minors̢۪ alcohol providing criminal Payton are out of office. It̢۪ll be a good day, then.

For those of you concerned about issues regarding education, I would encourage you to run for an ASI position. Petitions are due this Friday and can be picked up in the Student Activities and Leadership Development office.

Graham, why do you use the same username on all of your posts? Do you think no one would catch on? Aren’t you like a tech-nerd? You should be smarter than that. I encourage every one to look back at all of the posts from “springer”, all off them sound like the incessant whining that Graham is known for. Sniff Sniff stop talking about me! Sniff Sniff this job is hard!

Even getting the collegian on your side and printing a cupcake story every damn day about ASI doesn’t fool students of your lack of leadership abilities, you can’t get the senate to join CSSA like damn near every other CSU has, senators are quitting left and right, and your political views are getting in the way of actually fighting for change in higher education. Not to mention you have the verbal skills of a 5 year old.

Forget about ASI for a moment…we all know that when is comes down to it ASI execs are getting paid with our money to go on free trips up and down the state; that isn’t going to change.

What really matters is that education is taking the biggest hit here and we’re all trying to work with what we’ve got. I’m not the biggest ASI supporter but lets focus more on what we can do as students and citizens of Ca to make sure that education is no longer hit the hardest. Make a move and take action against the increasing education cuts because when it comes down to it the only change we’re going to see is the kind WE can effectively bring about.

Think about our fellow students who are getting ready to leave the credential program and have nowhere to go.

    What’s ASI doing?

-Sending students to CHESS (a state-wide lobbying event for higher education)
-Meeting with legislators in Sacramento (as part of CHESS)
-In talks with the Kennel Bookstore regarding implementing additional programs for textbook affordability
-Attended the Budget Summit to ensure that student concerns were heard and met during discussions of programs to cut
