Sports brief: Bulldogs̢۪ bats pound CSU Bakersfield

For the fourth time in as many days, the Fresno State baseball team was victorious at Beiden field, this time beating the CSU Bakersfield Road Runners 16-1.

With the win, Fresno State improved its record to 7-4.

In the last four games, the Diamond ̢۪Dogs have scored 51 runs while only allowing eight runs by opponents and are hitting .343.

The Bulldogs played a two game weekend series against Buffalo this past Saturday and Sunday and have played Portland and Bakersfield in their first two games of the Pepsi/Johnny Quik Classic on Monday and Tuesday nights.

Tuesday night’s game saw another explosion by the Bulldogs bats, including three different Bulldogs going yard – third baseman Tom Mendonca, designated hitter Jordan Ribera and left fielder Dusty Robinson.

Fresno State base runners stole three bases on the night, but the most exciting was right fielder Steve Detwiler̢۪s in the first inning. Detwiler stole on a past ball, giving the Bulldogs the lead 3-1 after one and Fresno State never looked back.

The defensive highlight of the night for Fresno State was a barehanded play and throw to first by shortstop Danny Muno.

In the top of the fourth, a ground ball ricocheted off of starting pitcher Derek Benny with two outs and a CSUB runner coming home from third. Muno scooped the ball from the infield grass and made an off-balance throw to first, narrowly beating the runner and prevent the run from scoring.

Benny, a freshman, got his second start and first victory of the season. He went five innings with three strike outs, allowing seven hits and one earned run in the first inning.

Sean Bonesteele, who has started two games this year for the ̢۪Dogs, came in relief of Benny in the sixth inning. Bonesteele went just one inning before junior college transfer Matt Morse came in for the final three innings, getting the save.

The Bulldogs will play every night for the remainder of the week, four nights in total. Every game will played at Beiden Field.
