Grooving to an unpopular beat

The first time I heard Chingy was a few years ago at my friend’s house. The song was called “Juice,â€Â and despite its filthy lyrics, the beat stuck with me and I had it memorized before the night was over.

Before long, we were blaring it out the car window on the way to a weekly college youth group we attended.

Eventually, though, my fascination with Chingy faded when I discovered techno, then rave, then Imogen Heap.

But when I was walking across the Pit, I saw a flier on the ground announcing Chingy̢۪s presence on campus at the opening ceremonies of next week̢۪s Vintage Days. I peeled the flier off the cement and my face lit up as I squealed.

All those memories of blaring “Juiceâ€Â out the window of my friend’s car came flooding back and those filthy lyrics were once again in my head. I wondered if anybody else would share my joy.

“I don’t really know who that is,â€Â said Janelle DiMino, a freshman majoring in political science. “I don’t really listen to rap music.â€Â

Eric Flores, a sophomore majoring in nursing, had at least heard of the rap artist. “I’ve heard a couple of his songs,â€Â he said. “He’s okay.â€Â

Okay, now we̢۪re getting somewhere, I thought.

But Akadius Ashby set me straight. “Chingy is weak,â€Â stated the philosophy junior. “I put him in the same category as Chingo Bling,â€Â the self-proclaimed Tamale King from Texas.

This really opened my eyes. I feel like I̢۪m alone in my Chingy flagship. I plan to be there at the opening ceremonies of Vintage Days, where he will be appearing Thursday night from 4:30 to 7:30 in the Satellite Student Union. I̢۪ll see you there.

Maybe.

Well Chingy is a coo singer I have no problem with this guy and yes he did bring in some energy to campus. Well it is true that he has not gotten as much support now as he used to; hopefully this hommie will soon. In end why not bring Mike Jones!? next “WHo!?”

I just got this….. but the way I felt about it, was good. I am born and raised in Fresno, and whenever something like this happens I think its great. I think that it is a great way to get Fresno State on the map, and bring in many more things. I also think that it is a great way to get the youth in the area involved with Fresno State!

I would have to agree with the philosophy major, “chingy iz weak.” I listen to rap music, but chingy was like a couple of years ago and he wasn’t even that good a couple of years ago. But for fresno state, i guess he will be big and good for this college, because this college iz kinda weak too. His message or issues need to be heard, so people need to go see him when he comes.

I think chingy coming to our campus is huge. A performer of his caliber coming to our school will give our dead campus an exciting event to attend. I hope he performs after he discusses some issues.

I really do not know who Chingy is due to I did not grow up listening to the Hip Hop music. Being a single mom and having children of my own. I felt I needed to find out what Hip Hop was really about and inquire about the music that my children listen to on the radio and on television. Sometimes people need to realize that sometime throughtout their life that there needs to be a change. Chingy coming to California State University of Fresno is a great opportunity for parents and the community to get a chance to find out about the hip hop culture. I feel having an event like that will open doors for Fresno State and for the community. My shot goes out to Dr. Bailey and the Hip Hop industry. Keep your head up and try to make a POSITIVE influence on the children of the World. The Children are the generation that going to have to lead this world. Everyone should ask themself this question, “If I just could just could have one positive influence on just one person life, what a change that would be?” LET’S MAKE A CHANGE!!!!!!

Before taking the hip-hop culture class with Dr. Bailey, I had never listened to a single hip-hop song and knew nothing about what the culture was really about beyond the stereotypes of materialism, promiscuous women, and gang life. Taking this class has helped open my mind to hip hop, and to its affect on the world as we know it. I believe that Chingy’s visit, and the discussion that will ensue at Thursday’s event, will be a great learning experience for invidivuals like myself, who have never had real exposure to true hip hop or been aware of its impact on all of our lives.

I heard that Chingy was performing at the opening ceremonies of Vintage Days, but later that day he will be speaking at a public forum on Hip Hop and responsibility/community…or something like that. Honestly, I’m not a fan of Chingy’s music. The only song I’ve heard is Pulling me Back, thats because my sister would always listen to it. What I really admire about Chingy is that apart from being an internationally acclaimed artist, he helped found an organization that helps children in need. I believe the Chingy for Change Foundation offers scholarships for underpriveledged children…anything that will help them succeed academically because that is one of their main objectives. And…I think its great that Chingy will come and fill Fresno State with his postive vibe.

BEING A TRANSFER STUDENT FROM SAN DIEGO STATE UNIVERSITY, I AM VERY EXCITED TO SEE AN EVENT LIKE THIS HAPPENING. I HAVE NEVER BEEN TO THE VINTAGE DAYS HERE, OR EVEN HEARD OF IT FOR THAT MATTER. HOWEVER, THE WHOLE ATMOSPHERE AT FRESNO STATE IS DIFFERENT THAN WHAT I AM USED TO. STUDENTS SEEM TO BE IN SUCH A RUSH TO GET FROM ONE PLACE TO THE NEXT. IT’S AS IF THEY ARE SO CONSUMED WITH THE CHAOS EACH AND EVERY DAY BRINGS TO THEIR LIVES THAT THEY GET STUCK IN THE GROOVE OF DOING THE SAME THING DAY IN AND OUT. I HAVE UNFORTUNATELY GROWN ACCUSTOMED TO THIS FAST PACE LIFE. WE ALL HEAR ABOUT EVENTS HAPPENING ON CAMPUS, BUT THEN WE THINK, “CAN I REALLY AFFORD NO TO WORK TODAY… SHOULD I DO THIS AND THAT INSTEAD?â€Â HOPEFULLY THIS EVENT WILL BRING A DIFFERENT STATE OF MIND TO THE STUDENTS AND COMMUNITY OF FRESNO. THANKS TO DR. BAILEY, THIS UNIVERSITY IS BEING GIVEN THE CHANCE TO SEE CHINGY. FROM WHAT I UNDERSTAND, THIS DOES NOT HAPPEN OFTEN, SO I WOULD TAKE FULL ADVANTAGE OF IT IF I WERE YOU……I’M INTERESTED TO SEE WHAT THE TURN OUT WILL BE LIKE. (I’M CROSSING MY FINGERS THAT I WILL HAVE THE NIGHT OFF… SO I CAN SEE YOU “THURR”)

I believe that diversity is important for this campus whether you listen to rock, hip hop, techno, or country. I also believe that any event brought onto the campus brings the campus to life and breaks many habits of students just passing by. When there are events held here, it entertains people and also give them a reason to stay on campus. If people are the busy bees that many look like, I assume most students simply come to school and leave after classes. Different events may attract different people, and hopefully this one will attract all people. Even if it is not the right stuff for anyone, it is still worth checking out whether you’re a fan or not. Anyone spitting a flow that is in mainstream music should be pretty entertaining. Come on, there’s got to be a point in life when you like it how it do right thurr right thurr. Whatever the event is, hopefully everyone is optimistic about it and that it can be enjoyable. If Chingy is not the right scene for anyone, they can try to host their own event. Thanks Dr. Bailey!

First and for most I must say that I think this is a wonderful event that you and your staff have put together for us students here at fresno state. I think it will open the eyes and hearts of a lot of people here at fresno state who doubt that something dealing with hip hop and the black community can actually be accomplished. so this is just a comment on thanking you Dr. Bailey for the opportunity you are bringing to Fresno State for the African American and Indies studies major.
    Thank you

I do not listen to rap music, I am in my latter 40’s so it is just not my thing…however, I have an 18 year old daughter who was very excited when I told her about this event. I am planning on attending the event, if I can swing it, and my daughter and a friend plan to join me!

I think it will be an enlightenting event and an experience that all can enjoy in one form or another.

I have never heard of this guy before, but would be willing to listen to him and give him a chance. I think this campus could use some fresh blood to shake our campus up a little bit. This would allow for more entertainment and more interaction between students and different styles of music. I would give this guy a chance!

To be honest I have never really heard any of his music but I have heard his name before. I think its a great idea to bring someone that is well known to the campus because it brings some fun into our campus life. Maybe this will open the door to our campus so that other artist can come to our campus and entertain. This will also give CSU Fresno a little something to brag about. Cool deal.

Frankily im excited about chingy gracing the CSU Fresno campus with his presence because i have another purpose in mind. Hopefully he does perform a few songs for the crowd, but what makes this event special is more than just his appearance. It is the aspect of general community service that is all inclusive and free. From this one event, a panel discussion on Hip-hop and contemporary community issues and concerns has emerged, featuring chingy. And frankily, im extremely curious as to what chingy’s postion is, because other than his organization CHINGY FOR CHANGE, what has he done to protect Hip Hop from the grips of this cheesy mainstream sesspool? Was it the ol’ Booker T. Washington, sort of sell out for a greater purpose thing? Or, was he originally in it for the capitol and experienced some sort of epiphany that motivated Chingy For change? I’m not sure, but i know that i will definitely be in support of what Dr. Julius Bailey is doing for not only for the community, but Fresno State’s campus. The boys and girls club will be in attendance, just a little something for the kiddies and people of all ages. Student athletes of CSU Fresno will also be in attendance to reach out to the kids and community. It is going to be a fun filled, educational adventure, and i am excited! I love progressiveness, diversity, and change. Even if you subjectively don’t want to attend, do it for the kids and the community!!

I hope that Vintage days will be better with Chingy there…other than the food, it’s usually kinda lame 🙁 I’m sure there will be a big turn out this weekend. Between Chingy and those Strongest Man guys pushing cars and stuff, I’m sure this years Vintage days will be a success.

I think that it will be a great experience to see this artist perform. It will be something different for Fresno State and maybe it will give a good view for other colleges to see what Fresno State is doing different. It will be my first time seeing this artist, so I am hoping that it will be a great experience. I would’nt doubt it.

So I am super excited about Chingy. Sure he hasn’t had a super hit lately but he has had some really good songs out. Besides that he is a super hottie. When I heard Dr. Bailey on B95 promoting Chingy I couldn’t believe Chingy was actually making it to Fresno State for Vintage Days. I think this is awesome and we need to get as many people out there as we can to show support. Hopefully, if there are alot of fans out there Chingy will perform. I will definitely be “right thurr.”

I don’t know and don’t listen to rap music, but I heard Chingy was a cool guy. How excited when I heard that he’s coming to campus…I’m not sure what he’s going to do but I hope he will do some kind of performing and would bring energy or life to a dead campus. Can’t wait to see him!

I HATE TO BURST YOUR BUBBLES THE WAY MINE HAS, BUT IT APPEARS WE MAY NOT GET TO JAM TO HIS MUSIC. HE WILL BE HIGHLIGHTING SPIFFY AND ZIGGY AND DR. BAILEY CLAIMS THAT HE IS UNSURE IF CHINGY WILL DO ANYTHING ON HIS ALBUMS OR NOT. DR BAILEY BEING UNSURE OF ANYTHING TELLS ME CHINGY WONT BE DOING “RIGHT THURR” WHICH IS THE SONG THAT GOT ME OUT OF MY SHYNESS IN DANCING AT THE CLUB. WHATEVER, WE WILL SEE COME THURSDAY, AT LEAST, SINCE IM IN HIS CLASS, I WILL GET A CHANCE TO SEE AND TAKE A PICTURE WITH HIM ALTHOUGH I WANT TO DANCE ON HIM (OOPS…WITH HIS MUSIC I MEANT). LOL

I am really excited about seeing Chingy this week, even though I have never heard his music before. I agree with others who say that his presence will bring some excitement to campus. There need to be more events like this, that bring a more diverse group of performeres to the Fresno State Campus. I can’t wait to see the show!

A lot of my friends are talking about Chingy’s performance at Fresno State and I am really looking forward to meet him. I am not familiar with his music, but I enjoy listening to all types of music and I feel it will be an excellent event to go to because it will take some stress of my shoulders from all the school work. I t will be a great event to socialize and have fun. See you all there!

I would really like to see Chingy perform. I havent heard his latest music but I would like to hear it again. It is great that Chingy is going to come to a CSU and hopefully perform. It is really going to show those who believe that hip/hop music is for uneducated people that that is really not true. Chingy, pickup the mic.

I think Chingy coming to Fresno State is a wonderful opportunity for us students and the Fresno community… I really don’t think every college has opportunity’s of big time entertainers coming to their school, especially Fresno State and I was surprised and excited when I heard about his appearance… I really think everybody who appreciates music (any genre) should take advantage of the free opportunity to see Chingy perform and maybe even meet him….

I don’t tend to spend much of my time listening to rap music, just like Janelle DiMino, but I can appreciate clever lyrics. Sometimes I don’t even consider rap as music because I don’t hear music, I just hear rhythmic speaking. However, if I said that I would be a hippocrite. Rapping is a lot like tapping (which is what I like to do). It’s a different, rhythmic, form of music that many people I know use to express themselves. So, although I’m not much into rap or Chingy, I can respect his art, and I’m glad he’s coming to campus.

I think that bringing Chingy to Fresno State is going to be great. I like some of Chingys’s songs like “”Don’t worry” and “One call away” and even the famous “Right Thurr”. I think that if any famous person takes the time to come to a college and go into a forum and provide us with some personal knowledge, it is not a money thing. I am in Dr. Bailey’s AAIS 104W class and I think it is good to have contacts in your life that can relate to you or even your students. I am not into the hard core rap, but I love R& B and some of Chingy’s songs are like that. I am going to try to bring my son to the opening ceremonies of Vintage Days and I hope that me and my son can see him. I really hope he does perfrom at least one song for us, but maybe his presence will bring more famous rappers to Fresno State. I really encourage people to just come and hear him speak to get a different perspective on life.

I am a lover of all music! Give me anything with a good beat that I can dance or sing to and I am a happy girl. Chingy may not be my favorite artist ever, but he is a talented rapper and while rap may not have a reputation for being the most woman-friendly music out there, it is stil fun to dance and sing to it. I have much respect for anyone that can make it in the music industry becaue I know it is NOT easy. (My cousin has been trying for the last 9 years and still hasn’t made it). I think it is awesome that he is coming to Fresno. It gives people hope and there is nothing wrong with that. I think everyone that comes will have a good time. 🙂

APRIL 17TH WILL BE HERE BEFORE WE KNOW IT. I HAVE MIXED FEELINGS, FOR BACK IN THE DAY I LOVED THE HELL OUT OF CHINGY. I DIDN’T REALLY CARE ABOUT WHAT HE SAID BECAUSE HE WAS CUTE, AND I COULD DANCE TO HIS MUSIC, BUT NOW I THINK I’M JUST INTO IT BECAUSE OF MY HIP HOP IN AMERICA (AAIS 55T) CLASS AND MY RESPONSIBILITIES ON BEHALF OF BLACK STUDENTS UNITED. I DON’T GET STAR STRUCK ANY MORE, MOSTLY BECAUSE I DON’T THINK THE MAJORITY OF THESE ARTISTS ARE DOING ANYTHING THAT I SHOULD BE HYPED UP ABOUT. MANY OF THESE COMMERCIAL RAPPERS LYRICS ARE GARBAGE, INCLUDING CHINGY. HE’S BEEN IN THE GAME FOR A FEW YEARS NOW, AND I STILL DON’T THINK HE’S STEPPED HIS GAME UP ENOUGH; ALTHOUGH, HE DOES HAVE THIS SONG ON HIS NEW ALBUM WITH ANTHONY HAMILTON, AND I THINK THAT’S THE BEST SONG HE EVER DID, AND HE HAS HIS “CHINGY FOR CHANGEâ€Â FOUNDATION, WHICH IS A GREAT SIDE TO RAPPERS THE PUBLIC RARELY SEES.

NOW DON̢۪T GET ME WRONG, I AIN̢۪T HATING, AND I AM GLAD HE̢۪S COMING TO THE CAMPUS. FRESNO STATE IS DEFINITELY GETTING UPGRADED WITH THIS EVENT, AND EVERYONE, AND THEY MOMMA, NEEDS TO BE THERE AND GIVE DR. BAILEY, HIP HOP IN AMERICA AND BLACK STUDENTS UNITED THEIR PROPS. WE TRYING TO DO IT REAL BIG AT FRESNO STATE, AND I THINK THIS CHINGY EVENT IS DEFINITELY A GREAT START, AND I THINK IT WOULD BE NICE, FOR ALL THE FANS IN THE AUDIENCE, IF HE PERFORMS AS WELL.

    PEACE!!!

I AM IN THE HIP HOP CLASS AND IT IS OUR CLASS THAT HE IS COMING TO TAKE PART IN. DR BAILEY HAS WORKED WITH CHINGY BEFORE AND KNOWS THAT HE HAS SOMETHING TO SAY ABOUT HIP HOP AND COMMUNITY RESPONSIBILITY. FROM WHAT HE HAS TOLD US, CHINGY’S SISTER (ZIGGY) AND HIS COUSIN (SPIFFY) WILL BE HIGHLIGHTED AT THE VINTAGE DAYS EVENT AS WELL AS POSSIBLY THE EVENING EVENT. CHINGY WILL BE ON STAGE AND DO HIS THING BUT WILL NOT BE IN CONCERT. DR. BAILEY SIAD IT LIKE THIS…NO BODY, INCLUDING HIM, HAS THE MONEY TO PUT ON A FREE CONCERT WITH THE CALIBER OF CHINGY. BUT, I PLAN ON SCREAMING AND BEGGING HIM TO DO RIGHT THURR SO I CAN DANCE.
BUT YOU CAN GO TO DR. BAILEY’S WEBSITE AT PROJECTEIGHT.ORG OR HIS MYSPACE PAGE AND GET INFO ABOUT ZIGGY AND SPIFFY AND EVERYTHING.

HOPE YOU ALL COME OUT TO THE EVENT AT 4:30 IT LOOKS LIKE IT WILL BE THICK UP IN THERE! I AM REALLY EXCITED CAUSE I HAVE NOT HAD A CLASS THIS COOL AND DEEP AND NOW SO EXCITING WITH THE 17TH EVENT…ITS BEEN A GREAT SENIOR YEAR…THANKS DR. BAILEY FOR BRINGING THIS TO FRESNO.

I spoke with someone who is in Dr. Bailey’s Hip Hop class and they said that he is not doing a concert! She mentioned that they were filming a reality show that day though and thats wild…Guess I have to make sure my hair is done..LOL
But I know he is talking at the Public Forum thats what someone from the class said and what the Fresno Bee said. Vintage Days is being sort of silent about it. I think its because someone told them not to publically announce him being a part of the musical talent. HUMMM…they arent embarrassed are they. I really dont think a professor like Dr Bailey would bring someone to campus to TEAR THE CLUB UP… Chingy is not even a controversial rapper. Or maybe he is not performing at all and all of this is a joke but I dont think so cause I heard Dr. Bailey was on B 95 and they have been talking about it and seems to be geeked about it. Not everyday do you get quality entertainment and meaningful conversation in the same day with the same person and this time we get CHINGY!! Im telling you I may throw my thong on stage if he does One Call Away.

I think Chingy coming to Vintage Days will attract a different group of people who maybe normally wouldn’t come to this type of event. You wouldn’t typically see Arts and Crafts and a rapper at the same time, so it should be interesting.

I think it’s awesome that Chingy is taking the time to entertain us! It isn’t everyday that a well known artist such as Chingy would be willing to perform to a group of students who seemingly do not even care whether he comes to their school or not. If nothing else, Chingy will put on a great show and everyone will be happy that he came.

Dr. Bailey put this together? Wow…I saw him on the news the other day talking about Martin Luther King…From King to Chingy what a stretch. I am not sure what Chingy is supposed to talk about, Money, Cash, Cars, isnt that all that rappers talk about. Ok, before people accuse me of being racist Im not. It has nothing to do with race but what can he say to me a Graduating Senior with a 3.4 GPA, worked my way though college? Did he work his way through college? I doubt it. But hey if he wants to rap, thats cool. Beats the hell out of some of the bands that show up on stage. SO I guess him and the hip hop dancers along with the DJ and the Hype man will bless us with the latest money-grabbing, pimps and hoes discussion that rappers put forth. Is Chingy different? Hopefully he is or Dr. Bailey has some real questions to answer. He represents Martin King Jr one week then Chingy the next…Maybe Chingy has a DREAM…. Not…He does have a cool song with Amerie though, maybe she will come to and they can FLY LIKE ME! LOL

I think that it is great that Chingy is arriving in Fresno to participate with the Hip-Hop Relations discussion. I really admire Chingy for recognizing Fresno and the students at Fresno State. I also think that an event like this that is happening is a terrific way of interacting the community along with the college students. I heard Dr. Bailey on B-95 Friday morning and I was impressed with how they were discussing the importance of hip-hop along with promoting this upcoming event. I personally believe that this opinion writer of this article should show up for the Hip-Hop Event, not because Chingy is going to be there, but because of the open forum that will happen in regards to hip-hop music. However, having Chingy there is another way that a rapper gives insight on how those in the business are affected by hip-hop themselves. It would be cool if Chingy performs while he is at Fresno State to share his talent with the community.
Kudos to Dr. Bailey for actively promoting and making an event like this happen at Fresno State!

I THINK THIS IS REAL…I SAW IT IN THE FRESNO BEE TODAY! I WAS LIKE WHOA. I ALSO HEARD THE PROFESSOR WHO IS BRINGING HIM ON B 95 THE OTHER DAY. IT WAS A COOL INTERVIEW ON A COMMERCIAL HIP HOP/RB STATION. I WAS LIKE DAMMMMMMMNN WE HAVE A PROFESSOR ON CAMPUS WHO THE RADIO STATION IS PUBLICIZING FOR SOMETHING POSITIVE AND NOT ABOUT HARRASSMENT OR SOMETHING CRAZY. BUT THE INTERVIEW SAID HE WAS COMING AS A PART OF A DISCUSSION ON COMMUNITY RESPONSIBILITY. I DIDNT KNOW ABOUT THE VINTAGE DAYS DEAL. INTERESTING…I DIDNT THINK THE UNIVERSITY HAD THE BALLS TO BRING A RAPPER TO CAMPUS AND PERFORM? THATS HELLA COOL. ME AND MY CREW WILL BE OUT THERE AT THE VINTAGE DAYS AND I ASSUME HE IS PERFORMING..HELL ITS A PERFORMANCE STAGE IDIOT! BUT THE EVENING THING HES NOT, I GUESS, HELL I DONT KNOW BUT WHAT I DO KNOW IS THAT I WOULDNT MISS THIS FOR THE WORLD…JUST TO SEE PEOPLES FACES WHEN A BLACK RAPPER COMES TO CAMPUS WITH THE BLING BLING AND PEOPLE KNOW WHO HE IS! I SAW HIM ON CARSON DALY AND NOW IM GOING TO BE ABLE TO SEE HIM ON CAMPUS…THATS HELLA COOL!

LOL…Ching a Ling on campus…wow….That beats the hell out of those lame bands that has been performing at Vintage Days. What got into the minds of those conservative ASI student advisors. It must be something in the air cause alot of things are changing around campus. Mackee Mason ASI president…wow..it must be the year of OBAMA for real.. but anyway im just a country girl who likes Kelly Pinkler and Garth Brooks. The only reason I know who Chingy is is because my older sister had Black and Latina friends and they used to dance in the garage to his songs a couple years ago. Either way, I guess its a step in the right direction toward Diversity and all that. Heck maybe if he sounds good I may ride on His “Ching-a-Ling” Bandwagon.

Im with Monica Kudos to Vintage Days for diversifying its programming but boo for not having him on the website of events. I wouldnt have heard about this if I hadnt come to the COllegian…whats that all about? Maybe its an April Fools JOke…Oh but thats over…

I am with you on Chingy. I like him. Its a shame his labels dont promote him more. I heard he was coming for a class? Hes performing at Vintage Days…Im hearing mixed things about that but I guess we will see. The flyer I saw said he will be here and there is definitely a buzz but people dont know if he is performing or just hangin out. But hey…I hope he does Pulling me Back or Holiday Inn those are my favorite. The new album just didnt hit hard and the Fly Like me song was okay…oh well, whatever the reason, whatever he does…hope his fly self does something cause our campus really needs some energy and this is the right time for it!

Kudos to the Class and Vintage Days or whoever is bringing him in. Ill be there “Right THURR” LOl as those St Louis rappers say.
