Track and field
The US Track and Field and Cross Country Coach Association named six Bulldogs in the top 30.
The rankings, released Wednesday, were the first released for the season.
Holding Fresno State̢۪s top ranking is freshman Gary Lee, ranked third in the long jump. At the Cal-Nevada Championships, Lee jumped 25-4, which is the NCAA̢۪s third-best. His jump is a new freshman record and sixth best in Fresno State History.
Also at the Cal-Nevada Championships, senior Brian Vazquez earned a top ranking by throwing a personal best of 202-11. His throw ranked him 25th nationally and second in WAC standings.
Sophomore Val-Pierre Dai̢۪Re is ranked 28th in the 400-meter hurdles. At the USC invitational, Dai̢۪Re was timed at 52.07, which also won him the top placing in the WAC.
Leading the Bulldog women is Sharon Ayala, a junior, who is ranked 12th in the hammer throw. Ayala also holds the Fresno State record and tossed the hammer 209-1 at the USC Invitational to get the top position in the WAC by nearly six feet.
Freshman Brooke Pighin has Fresno State̢۪s best marks for the javelin, earning a No. 22 ranking.
Also holding a Fresno State freshman record is Rosario Sanchez, who threw the shot put 49-6.5 at the Cal Poly dual to claim a 25th ranking.
Women̢۪s Golf
Fresno State head coach Angie Cates and the women̢۪s golf team announced Thursday the signing of Lindi Covarrubias to join the team in fall 2008.
Covarrubias, a native of Mesa, Arizona, has spent the last two years attending Mesa Community College.
On Tuesday, April 8, she won her sixth consecutive JC tournament at the Chandler-Gilbert Invitational. The highlight of her season was at The Lady Thunderbird Classic in March, when she broke a six-year record by four strokes.
Covarrubias is joined with Courtney Solomonson, a fall signee to the Fresno State team.
Softball
Fresno State is heading to Ruston, La. this weekend for a three-game series against the Lady Techsters.
The Bulldogs will play a doubleheader today starting at 2 p.m.
The series finale is a single-game matinee tomorrow at 1:30 p.m.
The Bulldogs are 3-2 in WAC play and are 37-7 overall.
