Baseball
The Fresno State baseball team took part in the San Diego Tournament this weekend and finished with a 1-4 record.
After losing three straight games on Thursday, Friday and Saturday, the Bulldogs were able to salvage a 9-2 win against the San Diego State Aztecs Sunday afternoon.
Fresno State got a solid performance on the mound yesterday from Justin Miller.
The junior right-hander threw six innings, allowing only one earned run. He struck out five batters and gave up four hits.
Offensively, the Bulldogs came out of their shell for the first time in the tournament, smacking 17 hits, a season-high.
Junior second baseman Erik Wetzel led the offensive attack, going 4 for 6 with two RBI. Third baseman Tom Mendonca homered for the Bulldogs and went 2 for 4 with two RBI.
Despite Sunday̢۪s success, the Bulldogs dropped the first three games of the tournament. They lost 14-4 to Cal Thursday night, 5-2 to the University of San Diego Friday and 1-2 to Cal Poly on Saturday.
The team̢۪s overall record is now 3-5.
The Bulldogs will take one the Santa Clara Broncos tomorrow night at 6 p.m. in Santa Clara.
Softball
The Fresno State softball team won their seventh game in a row Sunday, capping off an undefeated weekend at the San Diego Tournament.
On Friday, Fresno State beat Oregon 4-1 and CSU Bakersfield 2-1. The ‘Dogs continued their domination on Saturday with wins against St. Peters and Harvard. The five-inning mercy rule ended the game against St. Peters with the Bulldogs winning 8-0.
The game against Harvard finished after six innings as the Bulldogs won 10-0.
In the final game of the tournament, the Bulldogs were held scoreless against James Madison for eight innings. Morgan Melloh matched James Madison pitcher Meredith Felts inning for inning and also kept James Madison scoreless.
In the ninth, Nicole Angene doubled to drive in the first two runs of the game for the ‘Dogs. Haley Perkins followed with a triple to drive in Angene.
Melloh pitched a scoreless ninth to end the game and win her 10th game of the season. The Bulldogs won 3-0. Fresno State is 15-3 and off to their best start since 1999.
The ‘Dogs have a doubleheader against Campbell Tuesday night starting at 6 p.m.
Women̢۪s Basketball
The women̢۪s basketball team pulled out a close 85-84 victory over New Mexico State, due to some last-second heroics from freshman Hayley Munro.
With one second left in overtime, Munro made a 75-foot shot, securing the victory over New Mexico State.
With the win, Fresno State improved its record to 17-10 overall and 12-2 in the Western Athletic Conference (WAC).
After New Mexico State missed its first free throw on a one-and-one, the Bulldogs got the rebound and called timeout.
On the inbound pass, Munro threw up a prayer and made the shot to not only win the game, but give her a career-high 19 points on the night. She also grabbed 10 rebounds for a double-double.
Tierre Wilson also had 19 points for the Bulldogs.
Fresno State plays New Mexico State Thursday night at the Save Mart Center.
Equestrian
The Auburn Tigers edged out the Fresno State Bulldogs 1,037–947, at Sunday’s Equestrian match.
The Tigers were able to pull together a higher combined score of Western and English events to barely beat Fresno State.
Two Fresno State riders earned MVP honors.
Jennifer Jory scored a 77 on her ride, earning MVP honors in equitation over fences. In Western, Adriane Smith won MVP for horsemanship. .
Auburn and Fresno State were tied at eight events apiece to end the day. To break the tie, individual raw scores were tallied.
The Bulldogs will face off against Kansas State on March 14 in Manhattan, Kan.
Women̢۪s Tennis
Fresno State dropped a close match 3-4 to the No. 27 Texas Longhorns Saturday at the Wathen Tennis Center.
Melanie Gloria, No. 11 in the country, won her singles match in straight sets, 6-1, 6-4.
The Bulldogs will travel to Fort Worth, Tex. to take on the TCU Horned Frogs.
