Editorial: Johnson-Klein̢۪s celebration in the wake of her victory disrespectful

On Thursday, former Fresno State women̢۪s basketball coach Stacy Johnson-Klein was awarded $19.1 million after a jury, comprised of 11 females and one male, deliberated for only four hours.

The case is the third in a series of multi-million dollar lawsuits directed at the university, after former volleyball coach Lindy Vivas was awarded $5.85 million, later reduced to $4.52 million, and former Associate Athletic Director Diane Milutinovich settled with the university for $3.5 million, making Fresno State one of the most profitable universities to be fired from.

Reporters later caught up with Johnson-Klein, who celebrated her victory at The Lime Lite with, in her words, “some of the jurors and some of the attorneys and friends and family and fans.â€Â

Whether or not Johnson-Klein̢۪s victory over the university was deserved is almost secondary to the sort of indifference her celebration demonstrates to the greater, non-administrative Fresno State community, especially to the students, and to the taxpayers of California, from whose wallets her spoils will ultimately come.

In her partying, particularly with members of the ostensibly impartial and objective jury, we see Johnson-Klein accepting the verdict with a degree of levity that is dissonant with both the magnitude of this case and the charges she brought against the university.

If Johnson-Klein, who paints herself as a champion of women’s rights, deserved her victory, she should have accepted it graciously — there is no glory in vindicating the wronged, only the relief of having those offenses set right.

Student athletes playing under Johnson-Klein, in a move that challenged the deep-seeded image of scandal and disrepute with regards to the school̢۪s athletics, were ultimately part of the catalyst for her dismissal. They spoke out, but on some level, their honesty has been punished, the same dishonor they boldly defied only reinforced, in the end.

While Johnson-Klein was enjoying her night on the town, these and other students of Fresno State, whose concerns should ultimately be foremost in the minds of the community and administration, grieved the further tarnishing of their university̢۪s reputation and athletic program.

Where is the victory in that?

You guys must be tired from carrying the Fresno State administration’s water all over the place. The woman was celebrating because the verdict marked the closure to an ugly chapter in her life. Mind you I couldn’t care less about Johnson-Klein, but to criticize her for celebrating the verdict is pretty juvenile. There would be no verdicts and awards if Fresno State’s “good ol’ boy” culture was dealt with. Toe the Fresno State party line all you want, but these awards will continue until Welty does something about the systemic problem.

All the elements of an effective argument are present: well written!

I’d perfer poetic justice, over man’s jurisprudence.

    Discolpa por mi paranoia.

And she was hated high and low during her time at FS. I’d like to know the ‘friends’ she is referring to. Well, maybe now that she’ll have at least half of 19 mil in the bank, friends just come out of the woodwork.
