UPDATE: Shooting suspect in custody

UPDATED: 12:32 p.m.

Suspected shooter, Jonquel Brooks, 19

The suspect in a shooting near the Fresno State campus that left one dead and wounded two others has been apprehended.

Fresno State criminology major Jonquel Brooks was arrested at approximately 11:30 a.m., Police Chief Jerry Dyer said in a press conference held at the Fresno Police Department. Brooks was found in the vicinity of Peach and Olive avenues.

Dyer said in an attempt to avoid being recognized, Brooks “altered his appearance significantly by shaving his head and changing clothes.

The shooting occurred between Brooks and four others in Brooks̢۪ apartment, Dyer said. Each of the victims was found in a different apartment in the complex.

University Village is a three-story complex consisting of 108 four-room pods.

“I want to thank the Fresno Police Department and the officers involved, Fresno State President John Welty said. He added that he arrived at the crime scene at about 1:30 a.m.

The search for the handgun used in the shooting continues; police have six search warrants locations to find the weapon.

This may not be as clear-cut as it seems. Media reports clearly indicate the “victims” may have indulged in a little “self-help” and forced their way into Brook's apartment.

California law permits the use of deadly force to repel intruders, which these folks may have been. This may turn out to be a case of self-defense gone wrong.

Fresno is a debacle by any measure. Do Marcus Wesson and 112 degree days for two straight summer weeks ring a bell? No, what about the Chaffee Zoo and ‘River-Park.’ Once my degree is in hand, I’m leaving this foul smelling poor excuse for a city once and for all. And I’m not talking about Clovis. People who think they are the elite of a disgraceful place like this are worse than the ones who actually have to live in this hellhole.

If I was worthless, I’d still be living in Fresno, Sadam Hushein. Apparently you didn’t hear that the girl was killed over a Playstation?

Fresno has made national headlines for some of the stupidest shit over the last year it’s no wonder it is the joke of California.

Want some examples? How about Kevin Federline, a riot at Best Buy over the PS3 last Christmas, or theives stealing Christmas lights from other peoples front yards?

All I’m saying is maybe Fresno’s education system needs to include some classes in common sense with emphasis on the difference between right and wrong.

I hope that’s not asking too much?

You’re worthless, Joe King. What cute corner of the world where murder doesn’t exist are you now living?

If you would have stayed in Fresno longer maybe you would have developed more humility in the face of tragedy and respect for everyone involved.

    Take your comments elsewhere.

Dear people of Fresno: please stop embarrassing those of us who were born (but no longer live) here and consistently try to live the bad reputation down.

Having known all the parties involved it leaves an eerie feeling. We need to stop being a tolerant society and fully understand the different microcosm that affect society. Eventhough school officials addressed this issue on the web a bigger effort should have taken to bridge the gap between miniroties. The lack of public figures addressing this issue publicly and infront of students sends a negative message of negligence by school officials who are perceived in this many by most minorities. The bigger picture here is we lost a human being, a friend, son, brother, caregiver to many. The least we can do is send our prayers to the family and countless friends affected

this campus is trash, the quality of education here is questionable, and it seems that administration does nothing to rid the campus of these unsavory characters. I once had a class where an African-Americna gentleman told a professor to go “F-himself” after he told thestudent to quiet down. This is a university, folks. At least this guy committed his crime before he became a parole officer. That would have been a funny paradox for society.
