Doverspike one round away from conference title

Fresno State men̢۪s golfer Grant Doverspike may have lost his clubs before the start of the WAC Championships but he certainly didn̢۪t lose his golf game.

The freshman had his clubs stolen before the start of the tournament and was forced to use teammate Mark Pryors̢۪ golf clubs instead. Despite the change in clubs, Doverspike̢۪s scores of 66 and 67 in the first two rounds has placed him in first place with only one round left to play. Doverspike̢۪s 11-under par total is two strokes ahead of Utah State̢۪s Devin Daniels.

“He is playing some phenomenal golf,” head coach Mike Watney said in a press statement. “That is almost unheard of after what happened to him. He is actually hitting further with Pryors’ driver than he did his own.”

The freshman̢۪s outstanding play has placed Fresno State in third place, two strokes behind Boise State. Nevada leads the competition by 10 strokes.

“We had some good golf going but we finished poorly,” Watney said. “The wind picked up on the last six holes. The weather is supposed to be bad for tomorrow, which is good for us to pick up strokes. Our intention is to make a charge tomorrow.”
