Bulldog spirit fills hopeful football fans

Valley native fans proved their loyalty to the Fresno State football team on Saturday as 3,000 fans gathered at Jim Sweeney Field enduring temperatures of more than 90 degrees.

Fans were able to get a glimpse of the Fresno State football team in its annual spring scrimmage and see for themselves whether the ̢۪Dogs will have a successful football season.

After last year’s roller coaster season — losing seven straight games in a row — many fans still came out to watch the scrimmage and support the team in high hopes that the ’Dogs would recover from its one-too-many losses last year.

“I hope they bounce back from last year, junior Ryan Overland said. “I think they learned a lot from last year.

Others agreed.

“I think they are going to be better than last season. I have seen the way the Bulldogs have been practicing and they have a lot of heart, 20-year-old Daniel Zanartu said.

Sophomore Lauren Gaither also agreed. “The team looked really great. It’s looking like it will be a good upcoming season.
I’m definitely looking forward to next season and it will certainly be worth going to.

While some fans agreed that the only direction for the Bulldogs is up, one thing that fans have been weary about since last season is the position of quarterback.

Tom Brandstater has gained a year of experience and has endured a years worth of strict scrutiny. After many lessons learned, many fans believe that Brandstater deserves a second chance.

“My faith is in Pat Hill, Jacob Goodwin, 26, said. “There is nobody behind Brandstater with game experience. He is the guy to go with unless they get off to a wrong start.

Other fans disagreed.

“The quarterback really needs to start playing better, maybe get a little stronger, Pete DeYoung, 20, said.

Although fans may disagree on different areas of the football team in general, the ̢۪Dogs were able to give their fans a quick glance at what they can expect to see once the season gets rolling.
