Spring 2013 applications frozen

In the midst of potential budget cuts and more tuition hikes, prospective students took a significant hit by the CSU system: an admissions freeze. Spring 2013 applications have already been frozen not only for Fresno State hopefuls, but at 14 other CSUs as well.

I­have four dollars in my wallet, just one dollar short of getting tofu at Panda Express. While this is a frustrating situation (because I am quite hungry as I’m writing this), I realize that I spent most of my money on Saturday when I was out with friends. And while I was spending this money, I knew that I might be a little hungry on Tuesday afternoon when I’m writing my next column. C’est la vie.

If Governor Brown's tax initiative is not passed by the voters in November, the California State University will face more budget cuts, and that will mean slashing enrollment, laying off employees, reducing classes and the elimination of academic programs.

Following the trend of the last few years, Fresno State is implementing yet another budget cut for the 2011-12 fiscal year, with students and teachers seeing the largest effects. According to associate vice president of financial affairs Clint Moffitt, Fresno State’s budget is being cut by just less than $6 million for the fiscal year.

Once upon a time, The San Francisco Board of Education established the first publically funded post-secondary school in the state. Weekly Normal School, as it was called at the time, was the first of its kind on the west coast, and was the first school that would eventually become the California State University.
