Campus smoking policy wrinkles some noses

Smoke from forest fires raging around the San Joaquin Valley earlier this month may have been an irritant and possibly a health threat. But a more common, daily aroma wafting around campus, at least in certain areas, comes in the form of cigarette smoke.

Walled exterior to put new face on library this week

The Henry Madden Library will be closed Tuesday until 3 p.m. during the initial installation of the outer walls of the new building on the east side, close to the current library entrance. In addition, the popular walkway between the library and the University Center will also be closed but for a longer period. During the installation process, this walkway will be inaccessible from today through Friday, Sept. 21.

Air quality, heat concern students

Although temperatures have noticeably dropped recently in the Valley, most students cannot forget the hot temperatures they faced at the beginning of the semester. As the fall 2007 semester began, students were met with temperatures looming from the low 100 degrees to the high 90s.

If trends in Hollywood are any indication of the current social trends in America, trumpeting the ills of environmental degradation is becoming the new ‘in thing.’ During the past year, Hollywood doled out one of its top awards to Al Gore for his documentary on global warming, while celebrities as disparate as James Taylor and Brad Pitt have actively encouraged Americans to enact measures to combat the wanton destruction of animals, plants and the larger ecosystems that house them. Not surprisingly, the mass population has largely followed Hollywood’s lead.

Vivas case not over yet

This summer, former Fresno State women’s volleyball coach Lindy Vivas won $5.85 million in a gender discrimination suit against the university, a verdict the school has since appealed. Meanwhile, CSU Chancellor Charles B. Reed criticized the award and continues to stand behind University President John D. Welty, saying he felt the jury “was essentially trying to punish the CSU.â€Â

More students roam campus

Whether it’s because of the location, the modest tuition or successful recruitment services, Fresno State is seeing an ever-increasing number of students heading its way. This fall there are 2,655 first-time freshmen on campus—the largest freshman class in Fresno State’s history—and another 2,650 transfer and graduate students added to the mix.
