The Fresno State floral lab and the Rue and Gwen Gibson Farm Market are stocked up for Valentine’s Day with red and pink ribbons, heart-shaped boxes and plenty of flowers as Fresno State students, faculty and the surrounding community prepare to spoil their sweethearts.

Women of honor

In a historic decision, the Pentagon dropped its ban on women in the U.S. Armed Forces serving in combat roles, a move which has been met with much excitement and apprehension. The order was signed Jan. 24 by Defense Secretary Leon Panetta and Gen. Martin Dempsey, chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff. Though it will continue to be under review and its effects will likely not be seen until as late as 2016, it has become a hot-button issue that has brought up questions on both sides of gender equality, physical aptitude and the nature of war itself.
