The Fresno State men’s golf team has a bit of work to do after the first round of the John Burns Intercollegiate tournament.

An 8-over score of 296 has the Bulldogs in 17th out of 22 teams in the field, and 19 shots back of tournament leader UNLV, who completed day one with an 11-under performance.

Individual standouts for the Bulldogs came from a freshman — Brad Wyatt — who shot an even-par 72, as did senior Gunnar Avinelis, putting them in a tie for 35th in solo competition.

“We did not have a good day,” Fresno State head coach Mike Watney said. “ Although, we had a couple of reasonable scores.

“It’s only the first round,” Watney said. “We’re not that far back, with a better round tomorrow, we’ll be back in it.”
