Students needing to dispose of bottles and cans will soon have more options as the new on-campus recycling program gets under way.

Associated Students Senator Josh McDonald, who has been working on the project since early last semester, said students could expect to see 27 pairs of bins fully operational sometime in the next week. Bob Gedert, the City of Fresno’s Chief of Commercial Operations Solid Waste Division, made the bins available.

The project has not been without its struggles. A proposed program by AS was originally tabled in October 2006 while it was under discussion. Fresno State’s Plant Operations moved in mid-November to enact a pilot program for recycling modeled after AS’s proposal. This program was approved and the bins themselves were approved earlier this month.

The maintenance of the bins and collection of recyclable materials will be overseen by the Local Conservation Corps.

Fresno State campus had been disposing of nearly $3.5 million in bottles and cans per year, according to a Fresno city recycling audit.

McDonald said he was very excited to see the program get started. He said it was, “a good symbol of our campus’s re-devotion to sustainability.”
