Holiday shopping safety tips offered to students

Most people don’t think about their safety when finishing up holiday shopping, but the Fresno State kinesiology department and the College of Health and Human Services are planning a special self-defense demonstration Dec. 13 to help prevent attacks.

“With the holidays approaching it is crucial that local shoppers learn ways in which they can protect themselves from an attack,” said Tammy Lee Anderson of the kinesiology department in a press release.

Anderson is a second-degree black belt and teaches courses on Aikido and assault avoidance.

Anderson said the demonstration will help increase awareness for assaults and noted that women are particularly vulnerable to crimes such as carjacking and assault.

The demonstration will focus on training students to defend themselves in parking lots or in a vehicle against assailants -— armed or unarmed.

The kinesiology department offers courses in self-defense every semester. The holiday demonstration will be Wednesday, Dec. 13 at 3 p.m. in front of the South Gym.
