The Save Mart Center is getting an early Christmas present.
A double-sided, full-color marquee is being installed at the event center and is expected to be completed either by the end of the week or the middle of next week.
Located at the corner of Shaw and Chestnut avenues, the marquee will announce events and activities at the center such as sporting events and concerts. It will also show upcoming campus events, including Vintage Days.
The marquee stands at 30 feet and is 13 feet wide, with a 10-foot-high LED screen. The high-resolution screen will not only list upcoming events but will feature video clips and electronic messages.
The marquee is designed and constructed by A-Plus Signs. The Fresno-based company was chosen through a bidding process, Director of Auxiliary Services Deborah Adishian-Astone said.
She added that Optec, a company based out of Southern California, chose the screen. Optec has done numerous signs in throughout California and Las Vegas.
Adishian-Astone said revenues from the Save Mart Center paid for the marquee.
“We had always planned to eventually install a marquee,” Adishian-Astone said. “Obviously it’s not an inexpensive item, so we waited until the building was up and running.”
Astone said there weren’t complaints about a lack of a message board to inform people about upcoming events at the Save Mart Center. However, people had inquired about it before.
“I think it will help when we have events that aren’t as heavily promoted,” Adishian-Astone said of the new marquee.
“We got bids from two different companies, but A-Plus Signs was chosen because of the price and we wanted to keep the work local,” Adishian-Astone said. “They’re finishing it up this week, but sometimes construction gets delayed. The construction has been completed and they are finishing the electrical and fiber aspect.”
Adishian-Astone said the marquee will better promote campus events.
“It’s exciting because it will promote university events campus wide, whether it be music, theatre or an event like Vintage Days,” Adishian-Astone said.
