You can now call them the No. 23 Fresno State soccer team, as wins over nationally ranked Florida and BYU have given the Bulldogs their first national ranking in years.
The Bulldogs will begin their longest homestand of the year tonight as Portland State comes to town for the first of four straight home games.
The Vikings are a member of the Big Sky conference and bring in a winless record of 0-5-1 this season and are 0-2 all-time against Fresno State.
Fresno State will also welcome in Sacramento State for a match on Sunday. The Hornets are another Big Sky member and hold a 2-9 record against the Bulldogs all-tme.
With a 4-1-1 record so far this season, Fresno State will look to improve upon its already best start in program history. The Bulldogs have only allowed two goals this season, with both coming at the hands of No. 14 Utah in a 2-0 loss earlier in the season.
Women’s golf
The Fresno State women’s golf team finished fifth in its first tournament of the season, shooting a 292-303-300 for a total of 895 and a total of 31 over par.
Sophomore Jennifer Shipley led the way for the Bulldogs as she finished third in the individual competition, shooting a 70-70-75 for a one-under par finish.
Fresno State coach Angie Cates was pleased with the Bulldogs performance, especially with such a tough field of opponents, which included first place finisher Colorado, second place Baylor and tournament host Colorado State.
“A top five finish is a good showing and I was happy with our team scoring average,” Cates said. “It was a good tournament heading into Oregon State, and we are looking forward to playing good teams to get us up in the rankings.”
