The Allure of Autumn

The Allure of Autumn

A women's look requires sophistication and grace, while style, confidence and attitude is the key to men's fashion

A good way to show off personality with jeans and a T-shirt is through jewelry, as shown by junior business marketing major Avi Phommasak.

The semester’s end is rapidly approaching. We can tell this, not by the calendar, but by the contagious outfit spreading across campus: sweats and pajamas.

Yes, studying all night can be draining and writing enough to meet the required 2,000 words can cause a few gray hairs. But drink some extra coffee and buy a box of hair dye, because you are going to want to look your best this fall and end the semester with a fashion forward bang.

If dressing to the nine’s everyday is what you assume we expect, this is not the idea. Nothing is worse than seeing a girl trying too hard by walking in shoes which are obviously uncomfortable for her or watching that poor soul loaded down by a backpack who throws a tiny purse over her shoulder just to add a “dressy” touch. If you want to look vogue, there are many ways to do it without overdoing it.

Try to stay with solids. But when you think of solid, don’t automatically assume black. Black can come into play, but too much black will just make the rain fall harder. Add some colors to warm up.

An ideal way to add color is with accessories. A scarf is the easiest way to add a dash of color, and book bags follow right behind. If you have a backpack, try to replace it. Book bags come in so many shapes, sizes, colors and prints; it is hard for a girl not to own one. If you just have to have that designer logo, save up for a few more months and buy a bigger bag instead of the mini version.

Jewelry is another way to add color. The chandelier earrings are hard to miss around campus, and even though they are seen everywhere, they can still add the perfect amount of zest. Just make sure you pair elegant earrings with an elegant outfit, not pajamas.

Invest in a pair of boots meant for you. Whether they are ankle, mid-calf or knee-high boots, buy what works best for your leg shape and show them off.

Wearing skirts in the freezing weather is possible with a pair of boots. Get some fun stockings, a perfect pleated skirt and fabulous boots, and you have one of the most sophisticated looks of the season—without trying too hard.

When picking out clothes in the dreary morning, just think of what you see other people wearing.

Think of how you react when someone looks immaculately put together.

As the saying goes, the clothes don’t make the man; the man makes the clothes.

This fall—as with any season—style and confidence are the key to men’s fashion. To look good, a man requires more than just the latest look in GQ or any other fashion-oriented magazine. Basically, a man can look good—and even sexy—with the right combination of attitude and swagger.

The following are examples of celebrities who are famous for looking average, tough or even weird:

• Eminem is probably the most dressed-down rapper. He doesn’t comply with the industry’s trend of jewelry and throwback sports jerseys.

Instead, it is his uniform of a white T-shirt, Nike sweatpants and a black bandana, along with his nothing-to-lose attitude, that has landed him on the covers of several magazines, such as Rolling Stone.

• Known for his uncontrollable swearing and infamous link to fashion queen Britney Spears, actor Colin Ferrell usually doesn’t wear the latest fashion when he makes public appearances, but it is his bad-boy attitude that gets most of Hollywood talking. When he walks in a room or appears on a movie screen, it is Ferrell’s charisma and confidence that capture people’s attention.

• Comedian and actor Will Ferrell was recently on the cover of Esquire magazine with a 70s-style suit and holding a poodle, but he somehow managed to pull off the outfit. Why? Simple. His off-the-wall personality allows his audience to laugh at him for being a bit eccentric.

Celebrities aren’t the only ones who can make average look good. Everyday people can look good, too—just by being themselves.

The look of a serious college professor, with a twist, implies one is ready to tackle the world.

Very clean-cut and wearing sandblasted jeans and a sweater on top of a collared shirt exudes professionalism and a style of respectability.

Also, rock the look of a lonely blues player, with the lazy-boy style and the lazy-boy haircut that will match well with laid-back clothes, such as graphic T-shirts, dirty-looking jeans and Converses.

No matter what you wear, it’s the attitude that matters. And what you’ll have is a man at his best.
