Halloween brings out best in sports curses

Regardless of the outcome, major changes unlikely

So long Bush, 'Skins win

So long Bush, 'Skins win

From Behind the Lens By RYAN SMITH

With less than 24 hours until Election Day and still no clear leader in the polls, now is a perfect time for Sen. John Kerry to believe in superstition.

If Kerry isn’t already carrying around a rabbit’s foot in his pocket or clutching a lucky horseshoe he needn’t worry, he still has one more ace up his sleeve—the Green Bay Packers.

The Packers beat the Washington Redskins Sunday morning and believe it or not, the Redskins’ curse on presidential elections is very real.

In the past 18 elections, reaching as far back as 1932, if the Redskins lost their last game before an election, the incumbent candidate also lost the election.

It’s safe to say that while no one from the Kerry campaign is betting the presidential ticket on a Redskins loss, many of those same people probably took an extra moment Saturday night to say a little prayer for a Packer win the next morning.

And win they did.

In his first appearance in Washington since 1991, Brett Favre passed for 289 yards and one passing touchdown to help the Packers beat the Redskins 28-14.

If President Bush had been praying for a Redskins win Saturday night, he better spend his last nights as President praying that a packing company can move his belongings out of the White House in time for Kerry to move in.
