SaveMart Shootout comes down to playoff

The Collegian Staff Reports

The third annual SaveMart Shootout gathered the likes of professional golfers such as Fred Couples, Casey Martin, Peter Jacobsen and many others for a charity golf tournament Sunday and Monday at Riverbend Golf Club.

Couples, the 1992 Masters Champion, led his team to victory on his final shot of the day during a “chip-off” after his team had tied with Jacobsen’s team at 20-under. The match was decided when Couples hit his chip to within three feet of the pin.

Other members of the winning team included LPGA professional Carin Koch and amateurs Mike Michalski, John Burrough and Brenda Lavell.

Couples was the biggest name in attendance at the 2004 Shootout, which in past years has included professional golfers such as Chi Chi Rodriguez, Fuzzy Zoeller, Kevin Sutherland and Juli Inkster.

In 1992, after his Masters’ victory, Couples rose to the top of the world rankings and has earned $16.5 million during his 24-year professional career.

Former Fresno State golfer Nick Watney made his second appearance in the Shootout.

Watney, a two-time All-American, holds several Bulldogs records for men’s golf, including the lowest single-season scoring average.

Couples goes long
On the first hole, Couples grabbed a long iron in order to tee-off. When the crowd saw this, they heckled Couples into hitting driver, which he sent 300-plus yards down the fairway.
