Studying abroad travels far for college experience
By Ferdinand Pura
Studying abroad is an experience some students might want to have. But
some students might feel studying abroad is too expensive, or that a program
to offer such an experience is difficult to find.
But for Fresno State students, such an opportunity lies in the College
of Arts and Humanities, which is now accepting applications for the spring
2005 London semester. Dr. Vida Samiian, interim dean of Arts and Humanities,
emphasized the importance for Fresno State students to know such opportunities
exist.
“Students should really take advantage of this. There will be numerous
opportunities to travel in England, Scotland, Wales and all the great
museums from January 7 through April 15, and of course during the summer,”
Samiian said. “The cost of this overseas study experience is comparable
to what it would cost to attend Fresno State, and live off-campus in an
apartment for a semester.”
Once in London, students will stay in a facility leased by the College
of Arts and Humanities which contains lecture halls and housing for students.
Students such as Andrea Schuster, a senior majoring in communication,
said her stay in London last semester was a great experience.
“It is an opportunity to meet college students from all over the
United States. London is a safe and fabulous city,” Schuster said.
“I think the only downside I can think of while there is comparable
to my best day in Fresno.”
Schuster’s roommate in London, Meredith Cover, a senior majoring
in Philosophy, said the experience was the best of her life. Schuster
and Cover both said every student should experience studying abroad before
graduation.
Students who decide to spend a semester in London will not fall behind
in classes, Samiian said.
Students must fulfill a minimum of 15 semester units from their general
education division requirements.
Any students interested in spending spring 2005 semester in London can
attend the orientation on Oct.
17 and Nov. 21 at 4 to 6 p.m. in the Education building, Rm 140. For
more information regarding the program, call recruitment coordinator Carla
Millar at (559) 278-3056.
