Women's tennis is without two top players Jelena Pandzic and Lucia Tallo
in first competition of season
The Fresno State women’s tennis team concluded its first competition
of the fall season Sunday in the 10th annual Bulldog Classic at the Wathen
Tennis Center.
Leading the way for the Bulldogs was Junior Katharina Winterhalter, who
took second place after falling to top-seeded Anna Erikson of Sacramento

Erikson, currently the 28th-ranked player in the country, captured the
tournament title after being runner-up in last year’s tournament.
Winterhalter found herself in the finals after upsetting second-seeded
Roberta Fess-enko of Sacramento State 6-2, 2-6, 6-1 in the semifinals.
Winterhalter entered the season ranked 95th in singles after becoming
only the fifth player in Fresno State history to win 30 matches last season.
The final in doubles was not played after two Cal Poly teams reached the
finals. The No. 3 team of Nicole Shabaz and Samantha Waller was set to
face the fourth-seeded duo of Chelsy Thompson and Noelle Lee before the
match was cancelled.
Top-ranked Bulldogs Jel-ena Pandzic and Lucia Tallo did not participate
in the tournament, as players are limited to the amount of matches they
can play in each year. The third-ranked Pandzic and the 76th-ranked Tallo
are expected to compete in the ITA/Riviera All-American Tournament Oct.
7-10 in Los Angeles.
Sacramento State was also without its highest ranked player, as 24th-ranked
Marg-arita Karnaukhova sat out the tournament.
