Luethke claims victory in the first tournament for the Fresno State women's golf program.

In her first collegiate competition, Fresno State freshman Laura Luethke captured the individual Ptarmigan/Ram Classic title.

The tournament, hosted by Colorado State, marked not only Luethke’s first college competition, but also the first for the fledgling Fresno State’s women’s golf program.

Luethke shot a third round 71 (-1), after shooting 68-74 in the first two rounds, to finish three strokes under-par for the tournament—two shots ahead of Hannah Hoch of Colorado.

Teeing off on the back nine first, Luethke shot three over on the back before turning her game around having birdied three holes in her last nine.

“I just kept a good attitude,” Luethke said in a press release. “I knew that in order to win, I was going to have to make birdies on my last nine, which ended up being the best front nine I have ever played.”
Junior Meggie Fagundes finished in a tie for 24th after a third-round 77 and junior Adriana Chico finished in a tie for 50th. Freshman Whitney Wade tied for 73rd and sophomore Brittany Cooley finished 80th.
The Bulldogs finished 10th as a team.

Fresno State’s next competition is Sept. 27-28 at the Sacramento State Invitatio-nal. The tournament will be held at the Riverside Country Club in Fresno.

Women’s soccer

Fresno State women’s soccer travels to New Mexico Sunday to face the Lobos. Fresh off a 5-0 defeat of Sacramento State in the season opener last Sunday, in which five different players scored goals, the Bulldogs face New Mexico for only the second time. Fresno State won the first meeting between the two teams.
