Making a Habit of Winning

Fresno State freshman Jelena Pandzic heads into the WAC tournament with a 19-1 record and a No. 16 ranking nationally

For the first time in her Fresno State tennis career, Jelena Pandzic lost. The freshman, who plays No. 1 singles for the women’s tennis team, went into the match against Sacramento State ranked 12th nationally, and with an 18-0 record. She lost in straight sets to No. 78 Margarita Karnaukhova, 7-5, 6-1. This was perhaps the biggest surprise and biggest heartbreak of the match, which the Bulldogs lost 6-1, because Pandzic had previously only lost one set the whole season. Rebecca Evans and twin sister Elizabeth were having a stare-down with their Fresno State equestrian teammates in the airport parking lot. But it was closer to midnight than high noon—the interaction more like that of gawkers staring at two carnival freaks than shootout at the O.K. Rebecca and Elizabeth didn’t drive to Fresno Yosemite International Airport at 10 p.m. to fight with their teammates. The two sophomores came to give them a ride home.More>>

 

Jelena Pandzic won 18 straight matches to open her first season with the Bulldogs, before losing one match. Fresno State opens WAC tournament play on Friday.
