Malfunction leads to hand count for AS election results

Friday count reveals increased voter turnout, Fagundes as winner of presidential race

Despite mechanical malfunctions and a seven-year high of 1,826 ballots to count by hand, Vice President of Associated Students Molly Fagundes emerged as the winner of the AS presidential election. The unofficial total has Fagundes wining by a large margin with 830 votes. Business major and former Fresno city council candidate Michael Karbassi had 444 votes, and Sigma Chi president Frank Puccio had 420 votes.More>>

It’s lunchtime, and we’re crowded into the men’s bathroom at Fhima’s restaurant in downtown St. Paul, Minn., with Jon and Ami Thompson. It’s spotless, the Thompsons note approvingly. The actual toilet is housed in a separate little room with a real door, they point out. A nice touch for the privacy-minded. They praise the rectangular mirrors over the sinks that tilt forward to give an expansive view of the room.More>>

The phone finally rang. Everyone in Bernard Berrian’s living room could hear it but no one could find it. It turned up behind one of the sofa cushions that withstood more than eight hours of anticipation and restless waiting on Saturday. Once the phone was dug up from behind the cushion, Berrian answered. His cell phone had been ringing throughout the day. Each time it rang Berrian’s gathering of about 10 family members and friends got quiet. Was this the call?
