Men's basketball player suspended indefinitely by coach

Senior forward Jonathan Woods was suspended indefinitely by Fresno State coach Ray Lopes on Wednesday for a violation of team policy.

“Jon violated a team policy and must face the consequences,” Lopes said in a press release. “We will re-evaluate his situation next week and at that point will determine when he rejoins the team.”

Woods will miss the Bulldogs’ first two home games of the season.

The Bulldogs play Friday and Saturday in the McCaffrey Classic at the Save Mart Center.

The team meets Arkansas-Monticello Friday and Princeton on Saturday.

Woods started 20 games in the 2002-03 season, averaging 9.6 points per game. In two games this season, he averages 12.5 points and 5.5 rebounds.

“ We have said many times that we want our student-athletes to be role models and not examples,” Athletic Director Scott Johnson said in the release. “I fully support Coach Lopes and how he is handling this situation.”

Fresno State is coming off it’s first back-to-back season-opening losses in 40 years, but could have a good chance to even its record against Arkansas-Monticello and Prineton.

The match-up will the first for the Bulldogs against Arkansas-Monticello (4-2).

UC Irvine is the fourth team competing in the Classic.

Women’s coach Johnson-Klein to make homecoming; ‘Dogs will play in Cowgirl Classic

Coach Stacy Johnson-Klein will be making a homecoming of sorts when the Bulldogs travel to Stillwater, Okla. for the Oklahoma State Cowgirl Classic.

Johnson-Klein was assistant coach and recruiting coordinator at the University of Oklahoma from 1993-96, before moving on to Cameron University, Louisiana Tech and Fresno State.

The Bulldogs will play Western Illinois at 3 p.m. Friday, and will play Sam Houston State or host Oklahoma State on Saturday, depending on the outcome of the two first-round affairs.

After starting 0-2, Wetern Illinois picked up victories over Wisconsin and Northern Illiniois to even up its record.

Fresno State has never faced Western Illinois, and the Bulldogs are looking to pick up their first tournament championship and end their 19-tourney-title drout outside of the Fresno State Invitational.
