Bulldogs break in new digs

Senior forward Jonathan Woods had 12 points and 16 rebounds against EA sports All- Stars.

The men’s and women’s basketball teams performed the six-eight split Thursday night.

The men won at 6 p.m. and the women lost at 8 p.m.

In the opener, the men earned a 68-60 victory over the EA Sports All-Stars. The women suffered an 88-60 loss against a very athletic Team Concept.

For the men, seven of the eight players who dressed saw action. Dreike Bouldin is sitting out with a finger injury and may not be back until Nov. 25.

Transfer Francis Koffi, who has earned the nickname “Frenchie,” sat out the game with an eligibility problem.

“ We had a little eligibility issue with him today,” Fresno State coach Ray Lopes said. “It was more of a precaution to hold him out.”

Fresno State executed very well in the first half, shooting 51 percent from the floor.

Defensively, the Bulldogs used man and zone defense effectively, but struggled in transition.

“ We gotta continue to get better with our transition defense,” Lopes said.

With many players playing for the first time in a Bulldog uniform, Lopes said he just wanted to see the players give their best effort.

“ The most important thing I want to see is to play hard, play well and let the chips fall where they may,” Lopes said.

The women were overmatched by a team that shot nearly 49 percent from the field.

No member of the women’s team established herself as a scorer—Faith Probst coming the closest with 13 points on 5 for 9 shooting.

“ I just think it was poor execution on offense,” Fresno State coach Stacy Johnson-Klein said.

The women had trouble handling the defensive pressure put on them, turning the ball over 22 times. Many offensive possessions failed to exceed the five-second mark, and a second shot on the possession was nowhere to be found.

“ We didn’t play with a lot of heart tonight,” Johnson-Klein said.

The men and women will be in action Monday night for another double-header. The men will host the Gearhog All-Stars followed by the women’s game against Fresno Pacific.
