Cross country finishes fifth in WAC championships

Senior Kara June led the Fresno State cross country team to a fifth-place finish in the WAC cross country championships in Belmont, Calif. this weekend.

June placed sixth with a time of 17:43—35 seconds faster than her finish in the Bronco Invitational two months ago.

The fifth-place team finish was good enough for a three-place improvement on the Bulldogs’ 2002 finish. The finish was the best under four-year coach Shannon Lieder.

Sophomore Andrea Buckner shaved 1:18 off her previous time to record the Bulldogs’ second-best time of 18:18. Buckner was the most improved Fresno State runner and finished 23rd overall.

Junior Courtney Stewart was third on the team with a 39th-place overall finish at a time of 19:30.

Junior Nicolin Neal and senior Orelia Gonzalez crossed the finish line nearly simultaneously 19:42 into the race.

The Bulldogs get their next chance to better their times in the NCAA District 9 regionals in Portland, Ore. Nov. 15
