Who's tops in the WAC so far?

Women's soccer falls in home finale

Sophomore midfielder Barbara Davis winds up on the ground after an unsuccessful attempt on Rice's goal

The Fresno State women’s soccer team fell to the Rice Owls in a physical 4-1 loss Sunday afternoon at Bulldog stadium.

Down by three goals in the second half, the Bulldogs scored to reduce the lead to two goals but were unable to find the net again and the Owls increased their lead by three to take the game 4-1.

Within the first five minutes of play, an Owls player was injured when she collided with the Bulldog goalkeeper and was removed from the game, returning three minutes later.

A total of 11 fouls were committed by the Bulldogs, seven in the second half.

The first Owls goal was scored with six minutes remaining in the first half when freshman forward Callye Dannheim fired a shot past freshman goalkeeper Jeanette Paine.

With less then a minute remaining, the Owls scored again when Paine came out of the box and Dannheim put the ball into the open net.

“ I have to hand it to Rice,” Fresno State coach Stacey Welp said. “They came out very spirited and very organized”

To begin the second half, sophomore forward Kortney Lewis connected with sophomore forward Katri Nokso-Koivisto, who fired off a shot that was saved by Owls goalkeeper Lauren Shockley.

The Owls then sent the ball into Bulldog territory and quickly pressured the defense when junior midfielder Sarah Yoder sent a pass to junior defender Becky MacAllister who found herself one-on-one with the goalkeeper. After a quick fake, she dribbled around Paine and put the ball in the net, giving the Owls a 3-0 lead.

With about 30 minutes remaining, Lewis was able to put the Bulldogs on the board when she dribbled around an Owls defender and put the ball into the upper corner of the net.

The Bulldogs then pressured the Owls defense with a series of attacks. Nokso-Koivisto dribbled down the line and got a shot off but was fouled on the play.

Lewis followed with a shot from the left side that was picked up by the goalie. Seconds later, Lewis turned around and found sophomore forward/midfielder Barbara Davis open and sent the pass, but offside was called on the Bulldogs.

The final Owls goal was scored by junior midfielder Marisa Galvan off a corner kick, increasing the lead to 4-1.

Paine made two saves on the Owls’ eight shots.

“ We were really disappointed with this loss,” Lewis said. “But we have really high expectations for the WAC tournament.”

The Bulldogs will begin WAC tournament play on Nov. 6 when they travel to Dallas and take on UTEP.
