Equestrian wins first event of season

The Fresno State equestrian team finished first out of six teams both Saturday and Sunday in last weekend’s IHSA English show at UC-Davis.

The Bulldogs led the pack on Saturday with 27 points and four first-place showings. They bettered their score on Sunday with 39 points and five first-place finishes.

The other schools that competed were host UC-Davis, Stanford, Cal Poly SLO, Nevada and College of Sequoias.

On Sunday, Fresno State’s Amy Simmons nipped teammate Amanda Hancock for first place in intermediate fence equitation after a ride off.

Hancock won intermediate fence equitation outright the day before. Leyla Mundy, Liz Wiley and Amber Jones each notched first-place finishes Saturday as well.

Wiley, Anela Bird, Katie Oliver, Becky Legris, Katie Frost and Sara Beadle continued Fresno State’s dominance of the event on Sunday with their own first-place finishes.

The Bulldogs’ next event will be a double western show this weekend in Visalia.
