Mens tennis singles lose in first round of qualifying for tournament

Fresno State men’s tennis player Hector Almada, the 76th-ranked player in the nation, lost in the first round of the Icy Hot/ITA Men’s All-American Championships.

Almada lost to the 98th-ranked Evan Austin of Kentucky 6-2, 4-6, 6-4.

Both Almada and fellow Bulldogs Sergiu Modoc lost in the first round of the tournament, which took place in Chattanooga, Tenn.

Modoc lost to UL-Lafayette’s Evgheni Corduneau in straight sets 6-4, 6-2.

Modoc and Almada will compete in the main draw of the doubles tournament beginning Thursday.

 

Bulldogs golfers look to defend classic title without Watney

Fresno State will host the 41st annual Fresno State-Lexus Classic this Friday and Saturday at Belmont Country Club.

The Bulldogs have won the classic three years in a row, and former Fresno State golfer Nick Watney won the individual title in each of those years.

The competing teams will include BYU, Cal State Northridge, Colorado State, Denver, Fresno State, Long Beach State, Louisiana-Monroe, Nevada, Pacific, San Diego State, San Jose State, Texas Tech, UTEP, Utah and Wyoming.
