California outshot Fresno State 15-5 and it showed on the scoreboard in the Golden Bears’ 2-0 victory over the Bulldogs in Berkeley on Sunday. The No. 13 Bears scored their first goal in the first five minutes, their second goal with less than five minutes left and dominated every minute in between. Cal took an early lead when Liz Eisenberg scored in the fifth minute of the game. Until halftime, Fresno State could only muster one shot on goal as the Golden Bears controlled possession of the ball. Cal received a goal from Nadia Al-Lami with three minutes left to clinch the victory. On Friday, the Bulldogs edged St. Mary’s 3-1 in Moraga, Calif. St. Mary’s also outshot Fresno State, holding a 12-8 edge, but the Bulldogs made their shots count. Sophomore Kortney Lewis scored the first Bulldogs goal—her third on the year—with an assist from freshman Rochelle Jagdeo, who crossed a pass to Lewis after a throw-in. Fresno State also received goals from freshman Cortney Sobrero and sophomore Eriko Yoshiki. Fresno State’s next match will be a non-conference game against UC-Riverside Wednes-day at 7 p.m. at Bulldog Stadium.
Women’s volleyball drops two games at the San Diego Invitational The Fresno State women’s volleyball team finished the weekend 1-2 after competing in the University of San Diego Invitational. The Bulldogs’ final match on Saturday came against Maryland-Eastern Shore, in which they defeated the Hawks in three games 30-22, 30-19, 30-16. Fresno State ended up with a hitting percentage of .363 in a match were head coach Lindy Vivas was able to use many substitutes in an attempt to allow them to gain experience. Bulldog freshman Tuli Peters ended the match with a service ace, helping the Bulldogs improve their record to 7-3 overall. In game one of the tournament, the Bulldogs lost in four games (30-22, 21-30, 33-31, 30-26) to host University of San Diego. The Toreros would not let Fresno State adjust to their attack, with four players recording 10 or more kills, and three players with double-digits in digs on defense. Bulldog junior Kristen Fenton led the Bulldogs with 21 kills and was one dig away from earning a double-double. Fresno State hit above .200 only once in the match, in a game the Bulldogs won. The Bulldogs’ second match came against No. 19 Long Beach State. The 49ers defeated the Bulldogs in five games 30-23, 24-30, 30-24, 24-30,15-11. Fresno State’s Kristen Fenton set a career-high in kills, registering 31, while also adding 14 digs, two blocks, and five service aces. The difference makers for the two teams were the number of blocks and total hitting percentage. Fresno State hit an even .100 with eight total team blocks, and the 49ers hit .146 with 15 total team blocks. Fresno State’s three-week roadtrip will wrap up this weekend when the Bulldogs travel to Flagstaff, Arizona, for the Northern Arizona Invitational September 19-20. Men’s soccer goes winless at Notre Dame tournament The Fresno State men’s soccer team lost 3-1 to No. 11 Indiana in its last game of the Berticelli Memorial Tourn-ament held at Notre Dame on Sunday. Indiana bettered its record to 2-2-2, and Fresno State fell to 0-4. But the Bulldogs did score their first two goals of the year in the tournament. Fresno State lost 2-1 in overtime against No. 16 Notre Dame on Friday. Against Indiana, Fresno State was outshot 21-11, and goalkeeper Eric Kronberg notched six saves. Indiana jumped to a 2-0 lead after goals by Ned Grabavoy and Jordan Chirico. The Bulldogs came back after freshman Heber Mora headed home junior Dan Oka’s corner kick, but Fresno State’s comeback hopes were dashed when Grabavoy scored his second goal. Against Notre Dame on Friday, the Bulldogs fell behind after a scoreless 26 minutes when the Irish’s Devon Prescod dribbled past a stranded Kronberg to score his third goal of the season. Fresno State scored its first goal of the season when Jeremiah Leroy scored following an Oka corner kick. The Bulldogs’ hopes for their first victory of the season ended when the Irish’s Justin Detter deflected teammate Chad Riley’s free kick just with just 56 seconds left in overtime. The Bulldogs’ next action will be this Friday and Sunday when the team hosts the Goal Rush Classic at Bulldog Stadium. Fresno State will play Gonzaga at 7 p.m. |
