Lab School fire an arson case, fire officials say

Police suspect arson in the fire that burned down a classroom and the learning resource center, causing over $1.5 million in losses early morning Sept. 8.

An incident report filed at the Fresno State police station cites arson as the cause of the fire.

The fire was thought to have started from a soda machine after two witnesses allegedly saw fire burning from the machines.

Fears of arson have risen after investigators discovered that the soda machines were not plugged in.

The fire destroyed room 128, where 10 classes are held, affecting 270 students. It also damaged the learning resource center, the Student Support Services and the McNair graduate program offices, which serve approximately 1,500 students.

The fire is under investigation by the state fire marshal and the Fresno State Police. The real cause of the fire has not been established. No arrests have been made.

Meanwhile, the Learning Resource Center will resume operations Monday Sept. 15 at a temporary location in the Leon Peters business building, room 023. The center offers free tutoring to students.

The university relation has posted a correction on the allocation of classes moved from room 128. The update is posted on the University relations website, www.fresnostatenews.com.
