Women’s Volleyball wins tournament title at
Sac State Invite

The Fresno State women’s volleyball team clinched the Sacramento State Invitational title this past Saturday with a win over UC Riverside in four games (26-30,30-26,30-26,30-19).

The victory over the Highlanders gave the Bulldogs a 4-0 tournament record and a record of 6-1 overall.

Bulldog junior Kristen Fenton was named the invitational most valuable player and joined sophomore Robyn Keune as one of two Bulldog players to be named to the all-tournament team.

Fenton led all tournament participants in kills with 89 and kills per game with 5.56, and among the top four in hitting percentage (.363 and blocks (15). Keune produced 217 assists, averaging nearly 14 per game and recorded 13 service aces, all tops in the tournament.

In the win over UC Riverside, the Bulldogs set season-high marks in kills (73), assists (69) and digs (81), led by Fenton’s sixth straight double-double.

Fresno State opened the tournament with a four-game victory over Georgetown in what was the first meeting between the two schools. Freshman Tuli Peters set career-highs in kills(16) and digs(13), while hitting .243 in the victory.

The Bulldogs’ second match came against host Sacramento State. Fresno State defeated the hornets 30-28, 30-19, 23-30, and 30-22 to complete day one of tournament play.

In yet another four-game match, Fresno State defeated Oregon State to give the Beavers their first loss of the season. The Bulldogs held the Beavers’ top hitter Anne Watts-Roberts to 12 kills and a hitting percentage of .222 for the match, who had previously held a hitting percentage of .430.

Fresno State will continue its three-week road swing when it heads to San Diego for the University of San Diego Invitational this weekend.

Men’s basketball
schedule announced

The Fresno State men’s basketball team will host Creighton and USC in the Save Mart center this season as the 2003-04 schedule was announced Monday.

“ I am very pleased with how competitive our schedule is this year,” said Lopes in a press release. “This will definitely prepare us for our conference season. We have many tough road games, and we have some difficult games at home. It’s going to be very challenging.”

The Bulldogs open the season at Oregon Nov. 21. The Ducks made the NCAA tournament last season.

Fresno State also travels to Santa Clara Nov. 29 before the first games that will count at the Save Mart Center—two tournament games in the McCaffrey Classic Dec. 5-6.

After a trip to Pacific Dec. 10, the Bulldogs return home for a four game homestand against Creighton, USC, Washington State and San Francisco, before heading back on the road to start the WAC season.
