The Collegian is hiring for the Fall 2025 semester. All positions are open.
Editoral Positions:
Editor-in-Chief: The Editor-in-Chief is responsible for the production of the newsroom and editing stories. They handle a lot of the back end things of the newsroom such as meetings, budget and collaboration on projects. The Editor-in-Chief is the voice of the newsroom and spearheads editorial and executive decisions. They work hand-in-hand with the Managing Editor and the rest of the editorial board. The Editor-in-Chief maintains constant communication throughout the newsroom and with the faculty adviser. On production nights, the EIC is responsible for the layout of The Collegian’s pages and the copy editing of all content. The EIC also copy edits content and proofreads for every section and must be proficient in AP style. Resume/Portfolio required.
Managing Editor: Responsible for maintaining regular communication with advisers, section editors, reporters and photographers to ensure a smoothly running news operation. Facilitates communication between editors and reporters and address any repeated issues with assignments. At the end of the month, reminds everyone to submit their timesheets. Checks in with The Collegian’s financial adviser a few days after to make sure there were no issues. If needed, follows up with whoever has not yet submitted their timesheet. Keeps the website updated regularly, making sure that timely or trending stories are highlighted and that each individual section is also updated. Keeps an eye on which stories are performing well, both to give credit to reporters and photographers when stories go viral and to use to plan out future articles. Knowledge of editing and writing in AP Style is highly encouraged. Resume/Portfolio required.
News Editor: Responsible for coordinating weekly news coverage and oversees the editorial direction of the News section. Assign stories to reporters, photographers and contributors, ensuring coverage of important events and topics. Edits and reviews news articles for accuracy, clarity and adherence to journalistic standards. In addition, edit other section stories when necessary. Collaborates with editors and staff to develop story ideas and angles that resonate with the Fresno State audience. Manages deadlines and ensures timely publication of news content across various platforms. Stays updated with campus events, local issues and trends to provide comprehensive coverage. Upholds ethical journalism practices and standards, including fact-checking and unbiased reporting. Mentors and guides staff members to enhance their reporting and editing skills. Collaborates with other editors to create the Paw Print and updates News section of The Collegian website regularly and on time. Addresses repeating issues with reporters in order to foster a collaborative and creative work environment within the newsroom. Knowledge of editing and writing in AP Style is highly encouraged. Lifestyle Editor: Responsible for coordinating weekly coverage and oversees the editorial direction of the Lifestyle section. Assigns stories to reporters, photographers and contributors, ensuring coverage of important events and topics. Edits and reviews lifestyle articles for accuracy, clarity and adherence to journalistic standards. In addition, edit other section stories when necessary. Collaborates with editors and staff to develop story ideas and angles that resonate with the Fresno State audience. Manages deadlines and ensures timely publication of lifestyle content across various platforms. Stays updated with campus events, local issues and trends to provide comprehensive coverage. Stays informed on new trends, events and celebrations in and around Fresno State. Upholds ethical journalism practices and standards. Mentors and guides staff members to enhance their reporting and editing skills. Collaborates with other editors to create the Paw Print and updates Lifestyle section of The Collegian website regularly and on time. Addresses repeating issues with reporters in order to foster a collaborative and creative work environment within the newsroom. Knowledge of editing and writing in AP Style is highly encouraged. Sports Editor: Responsible for coordinating weekly coverage and oversees the editorial direction of the Sports section. Assigns stories to reporters, photographers and contributors, ensuring coverage of important sporting events and topics. Edits and reviews sports articles for accuracy, clarity and adherence to journalistic standards. In addition, edits other section stories when necessary. Collaborates with editors and staff to develop story ideas and angles that resonate with the Fresno State audience. Manages deadlines and ensures timely publication of sports content across various platforms. Stays updated with campus sporting events, local sports and trends in the sports realm to provide comprehensive coverage. Conceptualizes story ideas for sports columns. Upholds ethical journalism practices and standards. Mentors and guides staff members to enhance their reporting and editing skills. Collaborates with other editors to create the Paw Print and update Sports section of The Collegian website regularly and on time. Addresses repeating issues with reporters in order to foster a collaborative and creative work environment within the newsroom. Knowledge of editing and writing in AP Style is highly encouraged. Copy Editor: The Collegian publishes a number of stories every week pertaining to many topics. The Copy Editor will focus on editing stories during the revision process before being published. The ideal candidate must have a strong understanding of AP style and edit stories from News, Lifestyle, Opinion and Sports sections for syntax, grammar and overall comprehension. Responsibilities also include writing and formatting weekly newsletters of The Collegian’s top stories for subscribed readers. Knowledge of Search Engine Optimization (SEO) and previous experience with editing in AP Style is highly encouraged. Resume/Portfolio required.
Opinion Editor: Responsible for outsourcing Letters to the Editor and guest columns/opinion pieces from the community on relevant subjects. Encourages Collegian staff to write well-reported and researched opinions/columns. The ideal candidate is someone who keeps up with the latest trends and events happening locally, nationally, worldwide and on the internet. They should also have a strong editing skillset, including fact-checking, researching, reading comprehension, as well as good communication, time management, teamwork and candor. The Opinion Editor’s goal should be to create a civil forum of conversation through The Collegian with the student body and the community as a whole, while still maintaining The Collegian’s values of integrity and professionalism. Previous experience with research and reporting Opinion/Column writing is highly encouraged. Resume/Portfolio required.
Social Media Director: Responsible for developing and implementing social media strategies to increase engagement, brand awareness and audience growth for The Collegian. Creates compelling and timely content across various platforms (e.g., Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, YouTube and TikTok) that aligns with the publication’s voice, goals and brand kit. Monitor social media channels for trends, news and campus events to capitalize on timely opportunities. Engages with followers, responds to comments or direct messages and fosters a sense of community around The Collegian’s social media presence. Collaborates with editorial staff, content coordinator, multimedia reporters and photographers to promote articles, features and special projects through social media campaigns. Analyzes performance metrics and insights to optimize content and improve audience reach and engagement. Stays updated on best practices, emerging platforms and trends in social media and digital publishing. The Social Media Director works well under deadlines. Knowledge of Trello, Adobe Creative Cloud, Canva, Buffer and AP Style caption writing is highly encouraged. Resume/Portfolio required.
Head Graphic Designer: The Graphic Designer is responsible for coordinating the presentation of the pages in the Paw Print and occasional online story head graphic for the website. He or she reports to the Faculty Adviser and is under the daily direction of the Editor-in-Chief (EIC). On production nights, the Graphic Designer is responsible for the layout of the magazine, working closely with the EIC to ensure the print is holding up to Collegian standard. Assistant Graphic Designer: Creates graphics, illustrations and story layouts for the online and print publications. Assists graphics editor in determining the visual style of the Collegian product. The ideal candidate will have experience in graphic design, typography, photo illustrations and color treatment. Familiarity with Adobe Illustrator, Photoshop and InDesign. Resume/Portfolio required.
General Staff Positions:
Reporter: Reporters are the backbone of The Collegian. They take on story assignments from section editors, covering events and topics related to News, Lifestyle, Sports and Opinion. As representatives of The Collegian brand, Reporters are responsible for communicating with editors on weekly story assignments, providing coverage, writing stories on deadline, cultivating sources and reviewing story edits made during the revision process. Reporters are expected to write at least one story every week. The ideal candidate(s) will have: a passion for journalism, a hunger to cover breaking news, good time management skills, open communication with sources and editors alike, a strong AP Style writing foundation, journalistic integrity and trustworthiness, professionalism and a positive attitude. Photography/Videography skills not required, but highly encouraged.
Multimedia Reporter: Responsible for producing multimedia content, including articles, videos, sports podcasts and social media posts, covering campus news, events and issues for all sections. Pitches and develops engaging story or multimedia ideas with a focus on the Fresno State community. Conducts interviews, gathers information and researches topics to create informative and compelling content. Captures and edits high-quality photos and videos to accompany stories, using Adobe Lightroom, Adobe Premiere Pro and Adobe Photoshop. Collaborates with editors, Social Media Director, Content Coordinator and reporters to ensure accurate and timely reporting. Required to produce at least one story or multimedia assignment a week.
Photographer: Shoots photos for News, Lifestyle, Sports and feature stories. Familiarity with Adobe Photoshop or Lightroom is highly encouraged. The ideal candidate will have photojournalism experience, be able to come up with story ideas, have a great feel for social media and a strong sense of news values. Produces AP Style captions for photographs that are uploaded.
