Sounds of screeching metal tore into the air of Fresno State on Monday. Curious students eagerly peeked down the steps of the University Student Union courtyard, finding local metal band Jnx.
Tunes at Noon was a popular attraction for students prior to covid. It began to dwindle as people moved indoors, yet Jnx strives to bring this type of musical community engagement back. The Mariposa-based band played in the same area one year ago on campus.
On Monday, Jnx kickstarted the tradition back into business.
“This is awesome. It’s good to showcase live bands, especially young live bands and what better way to do it than right outside the student union,” said Jonah Dacanay, lead singer for Jnx.

Dacanay mentioned the growth between the sets at the student union, recalling not knowing many people at the show a year ago. This has changed with fellow rockers WARSCREAM and Permutations joining the crowd in support.
Young students from across the valley also had a chance to see the show as they excitedly walked passed, shouting in joy with their friends as they pointed in awe brandishing rock and roll hand signs.
“We hadn’t even played anything yet,” Dacanay said as the kids called from above the courtyard.
The crowd was intrigued, only breaking their stare to take a quick photo to savor the spontaneous live moment. Students stopped, and smiles and curiosity filled the canvas of their faces, enjoying the speed and energy that rock music produces.
Jnx is set to play this Sunday at Fresno State’s Vintage Days festival along with many other artists throughout the weekend.
“I’m super excited… We love the Fresno community,” Dacanay said.
This resurgence of Tunes at Noon is a step in the right direction for the local rock scene in Fresno. It adds new forms of inspiration to our campus that extends generationally.
You can find Jnx’s music on all streaming platforms. Catch them this Sunday at Vintage Days here on campus.
