In February 2024, a Collegian story exposed the vast difference in the funding allocations between academics and athletics.
The research in the story found that Fresno State Athletics revenue from student fees had increased by over 1,400% from 2008-22. There was also a 390% increase in athletics revenue from the general funds from 2010-22. This is a combination of money from the state of California and student tuition.
Following the publication, the Academic Senate came together and passed a resolution in April 2024, that incorporated much of The Collegian’s reporting.
The resolution was brought to President Saúl Jiménez-Sandoval to which he said he would address the senate in Fall 2024.
“We will be meeting with the Academic Senate in the fall to ensure clarity with the percentages utilized in their resolution which included reference to general funds and
student fees,” Jiménez-Sandoval said to the Fresno Bee in June 2024.
However, nearly six months later, he has yet to do so.
Jiménez-Sandoval spoke at the Honors Colloquium on Feb. 11 and had a presentation titled “Policy and Transparency: Foundational Leadership.
Fresno State empowers students for success through a transformative education rooted in active service with diverse communities, according to its mission statement.
Despite the statement and his presentation, The Collegian was denied an interview regarding the resolution surrounding the budget.
“The President is not available for an interview about this, but if you send your questions to us via email, we can try to obtain responses for you from an appropriate source, if there is one,” said Lisa Bell, public information officer for Fresno State.
This is a developing story that The Collegian will continue to report on.
