The Armenian Students Organization received a full grant of $3,000 this Wednesday at the Associated Students, Incorporated’s (ASI) second meeting of the semester.
Action item 7.3 concerned whether the Armenian Students Organization should receive a full or half grant for activities and sponsorships. Senator Ingeborg Kisbye motioned to approve the full grant amount, which was passed after brief discussion.
Vice President of Finance Guadalupe Zamudio Telles spoke to The Collegian further about what this means after the meeting.
“So the Armenian Students Organization had applied for the full $3,000 amount of our sponsored activity grant, and when an appeal comes into process and it’s over the $1,500 amount, it’s brought up to the senate,” Zamudio said. “So now they will be receiving the full $3,000 amount so that way they’re able to use it for their promotion and publicity.”
Just after the meeting commenced, Executive Vice President Frederick Lisitsa gave a statement of acknowledgement about Native Americans of the Central Valley.
“The Fresno State campus sits in the midst of the San Joaquin Valley, a valley rich in the tradition and representation of Native American culture,” Lisitsa said. “We are grateful to be in the traditional homelands of the Yurok and modern peoples, whose diverse tribal communities share stewardship over this land.”
At each ASI meeting, there is a segment of time allocated for public comment. Professor Tomaro Scadding came to the senate with a non-student perspective.
“I’m representing multiple hats, but primarily California Faculty Association and it’s a bridge between faculty and students,” Scadding said. “We absolutely think that needs to exist, but I also am a lecturer at the English Department. I’m happy to attend your meetings more often to become more aware of what are your concerns other than what I know from the classroom and the writing center.”
Before the meeting adjourned, ASI Director James Martinez gave a report about the state of the ongoing elections.
“As you are all well aware, we are in the middle of elect student government election season, of which we had 30 candidates who [volunteered] to run for next year’s cohort,” Martinez said. “Candidates will have a full month to campaign, [and] the election will be held on April 1-3. So, please, you and anybody who’s running, let me know if you have any questions.”
ASI meetings are held every other Wednesday in the Resnick Student Union Room 207 from 4-6 p.m. and are open for public attendance. More information regarding the ASI elections and meetings will be available in the coming weeks.
