Fresno State students, faculty and staff will present the inaugural Hmong Heritage Education Day from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. Dec. 14 on campus in partnership with community organizations including the Fresno Center and many area schools.
The Hmong Student Association, a campus club also known as HmSA, spent the last several months helping to create a fun day to enhance the mission to educate and appreciate Hmong culture.
“I am incredibly proud of the students in the Hmong Student Association, Fresno,” said Bao Johri, vice president for Information Technology and chief information officer at Fresno State. “Their passion, engagement, and dedication are evident in everything they do. They inspire us with their commitment to celebrating and preserving the Hmong language and culture. Daisy Thao, president of HmSA, and the students have done an excellent job in helping to organize this meaningful event. Many thanks to Daisy’s leadership.”
The free public event will preserve, honor, and cherish Hmong culture, language and history. There will be a variety of activities for people of all ages, including a car show, a Hmong Story Legacy 50 display, cultural performances and 14 workshops, including “Hmong Dancing with a Star,” “The Art of Traditional Hmong Songs,” and many more.
There will be Asian food trucks, children’s activities, and the chance to play “pov pob,” a traditional Hmong ball throw game. The event will also have a resource and vendor fair with community organizations providing information about their services and small business owners offering Hmong items for sale.
“A heartfelt thank you to our incredible faculty, staff and community members who have generously volunteered their time for cultural workshops, performances and activities,” Johri said. “Their dedication brings the spirit of this event to life and creates meaningful experiences for all attendees.”
