On Nov. 15 former undisputed heavyweight champion “Iron” Mike Tyson, 58, and internet famous Jake Paul, 27, met in the boxing ring to a celebrity-filled sold-out crowd in the AT&T stadium in Arlington, TX. The stadium is home to the Dallas Cowboys football team and owner Jerry Jones was in attendance. Other celebrities in attendance included Actors Samuel L. Jackson, Ralph Macchio, Charlize Theron, boxers Andre Ward, Evander Holyfield, Roy Jones Jr, former basketball player Shaquille O’Neal, and comedian Cedric the Entertainer.
The bout was streamed live on Netflix to an audience of 65 million people. The fight was scheduled for eight rounds, each round lasting 2 minutes. Paul approached the ring riding in “Krew Kut,” a Chevy C3500 dually truck surrounded by his entourage. Tyson approached the ring walking alone. The bout lasted the entire eight rounds. According to Compubox, a computerized system that tracks punches in boxing matches, on average a heavyweight boxer throws about 30 to 50 punches each round. Tyson only threw 97 punches for the entire fight leading to rumors of him throwing the fight. Tyler Wilkerson, a senior business management major, and amateur boxer, echoed the fans saying the fight was underwhelming. “The fact is Jake Paul had youth on his side,” Wilkerson said.
The fight was originally supposed to take place July 20, 2024, but was postponed to November when Tyson suffered a medical emergency on board a plane in May 2024. There were fears that Tyson would not be able to fight in the ring again after his medical emergency.
