Friendsgiving is a day to celebrate with friends and give thanks. Many Fresno State students are not from Fresno or California. These students express feelings of being homesick and lonely on major holidays, including Thanksgiving. For that reason, many began a new tradition of Friendsgiving.
The concept of Friendsgiving was introduced on Twitter in 2007. It typically takes place in November the weekend before or after Thanksgiving. It can be a Thanksgiving-inspired meal or any meal you and your friends decide to enjoy. The best thing about Friendsgiving is that there is no right or wrong way to celebrate it. It can be celebrated the same way annually or differently. Brian Obichere, a Senior Mechanical Engineering student, spoke about Friendsgiving traditions: “I can’t stress enough the importance of friendship. It makes life bearable. Nothing beats getting together with friends and enjoying good food. That is what friendship is all about.”
The idea is to be surrounded by things you enjoy (friendship, food, music, art, games, etc.). Friendsgiving can be beneficial to those without family or college students who are unable to go home for Thanksgiving.
