On Monday, Nov. 18, the California State University Employees Union (CSUEU) at Fresno State will deliver a 26-foot long petition scroll to President Saúl Jiménez-Sandoval, urging for fair student worker contract negotiations and more secure salary for employees.
CSUEU represents over 35,000 student workers and career staff across the California State University (CSU) system. The petition is signed by over 4,000 of its members who are saying the incoming CSU budget cuts are unjust amid record-high first-year enrollments systemwide.
“With enrollment on the rise, it is essential that the CSU’s vision reflects its growth,” the union said in a Nov. 13 press release.
Monday’s demonstration is only a small cog in a larger movement as 16 campuses are set to deliver the same scrolls to their presidents.
Delivery will take place on either Nov. 18-19, depending on the campus and aims to garner the attention of CSU Chancellor Mildred Garcia and the Board of Trustees.
“The pathway of mobility for thousands of Californians runs through the CSU,” the union’s press release continued. “CSUEU members call on campus presidents to urge the Chancellor to direct CSU negotiators to provide a fair first contact for student workers and to fulfill their commitments to career staff.”
The demonstrations are set to take place at these campuses:
- California State University, Sacramento State
- California State University, Chico State
- California State University, San Francisco State
- California State University, San Jose State
