From coughing in your room to stepping on a blade of grass, “A Quiet Place: The Road Ahead” presents a monstrous horror that is always listening for you to make the slightest noise.
Published by Saber Interactive and developed by the creators responsible for the survival horror series “Remothered,” Stormind Games has created a new single-player experience that aims to put the player in the role of a defenseless survivor.
Based on the well-renowned 2018 horror film “A Quiet Place,” directed by John Krasinski, this new game has you play as a young woman named Alex Taylor, scraping together supplies in hopes of surviving a quiet apocalypse.
The entire story is centered around a game of cat and mouse, but in this case, the cat is a 6 foot tall alien with bulletproof skin and a vicious temper. The monster, also referred to as “death angel” by fans, is completely blind and instead relies on sound to hunt its prey. This makes the player have to think carefully about how they wish to navigate the world.
Some of the many noise hazards that players face during the game are broken glass, large puddles, empty cans and big bushes.
The biggest obstacle of all, however, is the player themselves.
One of the most interesting and terrifying features the game offers is the ability to detect your microphone. This means that any noise made by you or anyone else in your house can be picked up by the monsters in the game. On more than one occasion I found myself being viciously murdered because my ceiling fan was too loud or my breathing was too deep.
The monsters themselves have a grotesque design that works perfectly for the atmosphere. They have long arms and legs that end in curved claws that are used to snatch prey quickly. Its entire body is covered in armor-plated skin that sports a brown rocky color, and its face is akin to a bulb that opens into a bright red flower…
…with teeth.
There is not much you can do to fight back against the monsters, but there are methods you can take to avoid them. One mechanic the game teaches the player early on is the ability to throw bricks and glass bottles. By using this, the player can distract the creature, buying themselves time to sneak away. If the monsters do hear you there is no point in running as they will always catch up.
Another danger that you’re forced to deal with is the player character’s asthma. This is the game’s version of a sanity meter, where if you perform too much strenuous activity or your character gets too close to a monster, she starts to breathe loudly and becomes at risk of a panic attack. If her fear gets to a critical point you are forced to succeed at a quick time event which temporarily lowers fear.
The only way to permanently lower your fear is by finding inhalers or pills littered throughout the game world. However, at times these items can be scarce so players should choose wisely when they want to use them.
When it comes to the overall story of “A Quiet Place: The Road Ahead,” the game is very linear. It starts with a brief flashback that takes place before the apocalypse, introducing you to your character Alex and her romantic interest Martin before jumping forward three months to after the monsters arrived. Shortly after searching through a ranch, Alex finds and uses a pregnancy test kit and realizes she’s going to have a child. It’s from that point on that tragedy strikes and you’re forced to go on a quiet journey alone trying to reach safety.
The game is straightforward in the sense that you aren’t given any story choices and you’re mostly meant to go from point A to point B. Thus, the true value of this game is the constant interactions you have with the monsters.
The game will take players 6-8 hours to complete unless you plan on going for collectibles, in which case it may take a bit longer to get everything. There are a total of 11 chapters in the game that take place over a bunch of different locations.
Overall, “A Quiet Place: The Road Ahead” gets an 8/10 for cleverly delivering an engaging experience that tests players’ stealth and quick thinking in a way that few horror games have done before. For those wanting to become immersed in a world where silence reigns supreme, this game will gladly welcome you with open arms.
You are never truly safe. The monsters are always listening, and you can bet they will be there to strike the moment your mom yells from the kitchen that dinner is ready.
“A Quiet Place: The Road Ahead,” is available on Xbox Series X/S, PS5, and Steam.
