Former Fresno State men’s basketball player Joseph Hunter Jr. has been arrested, once again.
On May 26, 2023, Hunter was arrested on four felony charges and one misdemeanor for possession of an assault weapon after police found a semi-automatic rifle.
The gun charges were not filed against Hunter. He then faced different charges which included selling or transferring firearms with the intent to avoid penal code 27545, which is the sale, loan, or transfer of firearms without a license, possession of an assault weapon and carrying a loaded firearm in a vehicle.
Today, Hunter was arrested in Fresno County at 9:30 a.m. on four felony charges:
- Possession of a firearm by a felon or narcotic drug user
- Participation in gang
- Obstruction of police officer
- Conspire to commit a crime
Despite reported scholarship offers from several schools including USC, Washington, Arkansas, Cal, Illinois, Nebraska, Ole Miss, San Diego State, TCU and Washington State, the Fresno native and former San Joaquin Memorial Panther chose to stay home and play for Fresno State.
To this day, he is the highest-rated recruit in program history.
Between injuries and legal troubles, Hunter played zero minutes for the Bulldogs before being dismissed from the team on May 26, 2023.
In July of 2021, Hunter told Jackson Moore of 247Sports that Fresno State was his first offer.
“I took that seriously for sure,” Hunter said. “It gave me hope that I can be nice, play in the league, and get my family out of here basically. They always stayed loyal, always stayed down and kept a relationship with me so that was most important.”
Hunter is eligible for bail but remains in custody at this time.
This is a developing story.
