As the Fresno State Bulldogs gear up for their highly anticipated home opener against the Sacramento State Hornets, excitement is brewing in more ways than one.
While fans are eager to cheer on their team at Valley Children’s Stadium, there’s a different kind of buzz surrounding the game—the arrival of Tioga-Sequoia Brewing Company’s newest creation, the “Red Wave” beer.
A longtime staple of Fresno’s craft beer scene, Tioga-Sequoia has officially partnered with Fresno State becoming the university’s official craft beer sponsor. This is more than just a sponsorship—it’s a partnership that celebrates the community’s passion for both sports and local flavor. To commemorate the occasion, the brewery has crafted “Red Wave,” a light lager with a 4% Alcohol by Volume (ABV). This beer is historic, marking it the first-ever official beer for Fresno State.
The name “Red Wave” pays tribute to Fresno State’s famously devoted fan base, and according to Tioga-Sequoia President Michael Cruz, the beer has been a labor of passion.
“This beer has been three years in the making,” Cruz said in a recent interview with GV Wire. “It’s a super drinkable beer and perfect for tailgating in our hot summers.”
And from my own taste test, I’d have to agree. Crisp, floral and refreshingly smooth, it’s the kind of beer that perfectly captures the essence of Fresno.
I had the pleasure of visiting Tioga-Sequoia’s downtown taproom and the opportunity to chat with Jon Brazie, the brewery’s head brewer.
“We’re thrilled that the partnership is finally official,” Brazie said. “We’ve been gearing up for this football season for a while now, and it’s great to see everything come together.”
Bartender Greg Vanderlana also weighed in on the significance of the new beer.
“Red Wave is something we’ve been needing in our arsenal,” Vanderlana said.
Fresno State fans are just as enthusiastic about the new brew. Lawrence Oxford, a Bulldog supporter, was pleasantly surprised.
“Honestly, it’s better than I expected,” Oxford said. “I’d buy a whole case if I could.”
For those eager to try Red Wave, they won’t have to look far. The beer is available at Tioga-Sequoia taprooms, Fresno State home games, and a variety of local stores across Fresno County. I picked up a six-pack at my local Save Mart. It retails at $9.99, fans can also find it at popular spots like Dog House Grill, Slater’s, and Total Wine. Royalties from every beer sold will generate revenue for the university.
As the Bulldogs and their loyal fans prepare for the season ahead, it’s clear that the Red Wave is already making waves. Whether they’re tailgating outside the stadium or relaxing at home, this craft beer is bound to become a staple for the Red Wave faithful.
