Brat Summer has brought many memorable moments from amazing projects to surprising collaborations, but none as important as the resurgence of Chappell Roan and Sabrina Carpenter.
(Charli XCX) “product of the internet,” produced her first amateur album “14” which was never fully released as an official album, but caught the attention of a promoter through MySpace. This promoter ran illegal raves in which she gladly took the opportunity to perform at.
In 2013, Charli came out with her first album “True Romance.” The album didn’t have major success, but it gave the opportunity to have a collaboration with big up-and-coming artist, Iggy Azalea, with the song “Fancy.”
A year later, her 2014 song “Boom Clap” appeared in the movie “A Fault in Our Stars,” leading to collaborations with artists like Benny Blanco and the band Weezer.
But this wasn’t the music she wanted to make. She admitted that she was only chasing chart points with the album Sucker, rather than writing songs that she liked.
Five years later, with some success from her single EPs and various albums, the album that resurrected Charli back was her album “Brat.”
“Charli has also promoted her album online by speaking directly to fans, opting for straightforward interviews on TikTok and unexpected appearances,” Moises Mendez II wrote in a Time’s article.
She promoted “Brat” by playing snippets of song lyrics at the Boiler Room in New York.
It wasn’t just the album that was made notable, but the song “Von Dutch” featuring popular TikToker Addison Rae went viral because of Rae’s iconic scream.
Some fans, with the help of Charli’s X post, gathered at a certain location that is now called the “Brat Wall” which was painted green and has the signature Brat logo on it.
She would dance standing up on cars singing her songs, while live streaming the whole charade.
Most notable coming out from the release of Brat was a post she made on X with the caption and deemed iconic line ‘I’m your favorite reference.”
With the resurgence of Charli XCX into mainstream media, other artists have taken the advantage of social media as well, to get their songs out there in the world of media.
Chappell Roan was also amongst the artists in 2024 that had a huge boom in popularity even though she has been making music long before that.
In November 2014 under her real name Kayleigh Rose she debuted her first track “Die Young” on her Youtube, but it didn’t gain much popularity when it was released.
In 2017 Atlantic Records came across the song and signed Roan.
Under Atlantic Records she soon released her EP single, “School Nights.” Three years later in 202, she released her song “Pink Pony Club,” which was inspired by Roan’s infatuation with gogo dancers.
Roan was dropped from Atlantic Records as her singles didn’t reach as much success as Atlantic would have wanted. The company would soon realize that this was a mistake.
In 2021, “Pink Pony Club” became a huge success, reaching 10 million streams on Spotify and closer to 150 million streams in 2024.
Through this, she gained the traction she needed to be recognized again. Roan was selected to open for Olivia Rodrigo in 2022 along with Fletcher for Rodrigo’s “My Dreams” tour.
This milestone was only the beginning for Roan, as she would be known as a household name a couple of years later.
TikTok, which has been the home for many viral dances, would pick up on Roan’s 2023 song “HOT TO GO!” in 2024. The popular dance consists of moving your hands to depict out the words of the title while the song is played in the background.
Due to the popularity of this trend, Roan was offered a spot in Coachella 2024, and was a highlight at the recent Lollapalooza in August.
Roan was finally able to make a name for herself and jump into mainstream media along with some other notable ladies, Sabrina Carpenter being one of them.
At a young age, Carpenter started singing covers of songs from Taylor Swift and Adele. She got an opportunity to perform in 2009 when she entered MileyWorld’s “Be a Star Contest,” earning her third place out of 10,000 entries.
Carpenter paused the momentum on her singing career and took to the camera to become an actress.
She started out as a guest role on the show “Law & Order: Special Victims Unit” and landed a bigger role in 2014 as Maya on the Disney show “Girl Meets World.”
It wasn’t long until she was picked up by Hollywood Records at the age of 12. This led to the release of her song “Can’t Blame a Girl for Trying.”
A few years later, Carpenter would have a few more acting roles through Disney Channel, but got her even big break with the song Espresso, which has over a billion streams.
Another popular song is “Nonsense,” holding around 9 million streams.
The song garnered lots of traction online since Carpenter would switch out the original lyrics at the end of nonsense, with words relating to how she was feeling at the end of the concert.
With these ladies’ iconic lines like Roan’s, “I’m your artist’s favorite artist,” Carpenter’s “I’m on SNL and you’re not” and Charli’s “I’m your favorite reference,” it’s a no-brainer that these women have made names for themselves, and solidified their spots in the limelight thanks to social media.
