Multiple Collegian staff members placed in five categories in the statewide California News Publishers Association (CNPA) college campus contest.
The Collegian competed against four-year universities such as the University of California, Berkeley, San Jose State and Long Beach State.
Reporter David Victor earned the highest honor in the writing category for his piece on student-athlete mental health sharing the stories of multiple student-athletes at Fresno State and their struggles with mental health.
Victor placed above Stanford University, San Jose State and Cal Poly-Pomona.
The upkeep and organization of The Collegian website earned the staff third place just below the Daily 49er and the Daily Titan.
A project that the Collegian Staff took on during the Spring of 2023 was the Collegian Cooldown sports podcast, and a year later it placed third in the state.
One of the judges commented, “The sports podcast participants are knowledgeable on the issues and their discussion format is easy to listen to.”

- Manuel Hernandez earned second place in columns for his opinion piece on “Why we need student journalism,” focusing on his experience as a student journalist.
- The Collegian Cooldown sports podcast earned third place in the podcasts category; produced by Blake Wolf and hosted by Valentina Saldaña, Alexis Bruno and Dylan Gonzales.
- For the online general excellence category The Collegian placed third.
- Valentina Saldaña placed fifth in the video journalism category for her video following “A day in the life of Fresno State’s women’s basketball coach Jamie White.”
