On Friday, April 12, a press conference will be held to formally introduce the new Fresno State men’s basketball Head Coach, Vance Walberg.
Here’s what you may expect:
Connection to the Valley
- How does Walberg feel staying in the Central Valley after coaching at Clovis West High School?
- Is Walberg’s family a component of why he stayed in the Valley?
Walberg and his family have been rooted in the Valley. One of his daughters, Jaimie Rose Winder, married Jonathan Winder, the former women’s volleyball Head Coach at Fresno State. His other daughter, Heather Long, is the former Clovis North girl’s basketball head coach.
Future Staff
- What’s next for the remainder of the available coaching positions?
- Will there be any other coaches on staff from major basketball schools?
John Welch was the first to be announced as assistant coach on Walberg’s staff. Welch previously spent time at Fresno State under the same title from 1995-2002. He spent last season as an assistant coach for the University of Kentucky.
Dribble Drive Offense
- Will he implement the dribble drive offense at Fresno State?
- How does he plan to incorporate it?
Walberg first developed the dribble drive offense during his time coaching at Fresno City College. Afterward, he became widely known for this playing style, implementing it into his games at Pepperdine University and Clovis West.
Recruiting Athletes
- What athletes will he bring in?
- Will he keep any athletes from the 2023-24 roster?
- How will he adapt to the transfer portal?
- Will he know the logistics of Name, Image and Likeness (NIL)
The Fresno State men’s basketball team currently has six players in the transfer portal, which are Xavier DuSell, Leo Colimerio, Enoch Boakye, Isaac Taveras, Eduardo Andre and Donavan Yap. It will be up to Walberg to decide who he wants to keep for the next season.
Here’s what you may take away following the press conference on Friday.
