Elections for the Associated Students, Inc. (ASI) president are rapidly approaching, and voters can look forward to the upcoming presidential debate on Monday, March 11.
The candidates who will find themselves in the hot seat are Black Student Union President Jaden Baker and College of Arts and Humanities Sen. Faith Van Hoven. The debate will be moderated by The Collegian’s news editor, Jazmin Alvarado, and copy editor, Carlos Rene Castro.
Baker is building his platform with the goal of unifying on-campus clubs and organizations, as well as increasing academic support for marginalized students.
“I plan to work effortlessly through these next three years and work with my community to build as high as possible. Let’s work to make sure the students come first,” Baker said in his mission statement.
Van Hoven is building a unified front with vice president candidate Marco Florez, as they aim to increase accessibility for campus resources.
“We promise not only to expand the opportunities for students but also to advocate for their usage,” the pair said on Instagram.
Students who are enrolled at Fresno State and have paid the student body fee can place their votes electronically. On March 19, students will receive an email with a link and account information to be able to cast their vote. The Resnick Student Union and Library will also have election booths for those who prefer to vote in person.
The purpose of ASI is to ensure that student interests are considered in university decisions. They serve as a representative for the student body and aim to further services that meet student needs.
The upcoming debate will allow candidates to show what changes they can make on campus, and give voters the opportunity to see who can best represent them. As the election grows closer, more information can be found on the ASI website.
The debate will be in RSU Room 207 from 12-1 p.m. and is open to the public.
