Fresno DA doesn’t file gun charges against basketball player

The Fresno County District Attorney’s Office didn’t file charges against Fresno State basketball player Joseph Hunter, 19, for his arrest on Tuesday, May 17. 

Hunter was arrested along with three individuals on suspicion of carrying a loaded firearm in public, resisting arrest and having a concealed weapon in a vehicle. He has no prior police record. 

“Fresno State Athletics has been informed that at this time no charges will be filed against our student-athlete. The student-athlete will resume team activities,” according to a statement provided by the athletics department .

Charges were also not filed against Vonkell Damar Holmes, 22.

A spokesperson from the DA’s office said the “charges were filed against the driver and the person that possessed the firearm within the vehicle,” as reported by the Fresno Bee. The two charged are Qiwan Whittiker, 25, and Isaiah Andre Pirtle, 23. 

Whittiker was the driver of the vehicle at the time of the stop, and Pirtle was in possession of the semi-automatic rifle.
